Got home and the house smelled wonderfully like Christmas pudding. Not being happy with our stockpot and its steamer insert, Wonderful Husband co-opted both of my canning pots (water bath and pressure) and used them to steam the two puddings instead. So now they get covered up and tucked away (probably in the back bedroom since it's (1) little-used, (2) cat-proof, and (3) the coldest room in the house) for the next month and ten days. Then, while I was washing up the dishes from his first round of endeavors, he mixed up the Christmas cake, which will be going in the oven momentarily.

Also, odd note from my last gym session: being a bit worn out on Elv1s and Daft Punk's Discovery album, I cast about my fake!Pod to see what else we had ripped from CD. *NSync's Celebrity album is pure suckage for the gym, but NKOTB's Hangin' Tough is actually not too bad.

And, finally, I found one of my plastic tubs which will fit the Singer sewing machine in it in most configurations (sitting right-side up, sadly, being the one it won't do; it's too long for the tub), and poured a gallon and a half of EvapoRust in with it. The machine has been sitting with its neck down for a couple of days, since that's where most of the internal corrosion is; I'm tilting it back and forth a couple ways so all the parts get a good soak. Then I'll do the head, let it all drain, and go back to seeing if I can get it to unfreeze.

Guess where I was last night? )

Well, last night. There was a concert. There was NKOTB. There was a not-so-random celebrity sitting in the same section I was, which slightly weirds me out but fortunately amuses me much more. There was a drunk woman tripping on the stairs next to me, spilling her beer on my trousers in the process, and all over the floor so it was sticky later. I wrote down the set list and will be doing a looooong post about it behind the magical cut tag later, but in short, was it awesome? IT WAS.

Somehow a boyband has managed to age with grace and dignity, keep their own style, and make me really happy that they came back together, even if I still think their new album is one of their weakest.

So, tonight I finally listened to the new NKOTB CD....

I am... disappointed.

There were a few songs that I liked. I think "Single," in fact, is rather clever in its view of the relationship between fans and boyband songs. Overall, though, the CD is some pseudo-balladic pieces and a lot of what's called "dance" music (which, generally, is something I wouldn't be caught dead dancing to). What's missing? POP. There's nothing upbeat and catchy, which is, frankly, what the entire pop genre and specifically boybands get sold on. Even the pseudo-romantic pieces fail pretty hard, being more "I love your body" than "I love you." Hint: women of all ages prefer the latter to the former. Especially when repeated in the chorus for 3-4 minutes at a stretch....

I can appreciate that the artists are older and at different places in their lives than they were 15-20 years ago. I can write off my feelings of vague insult of their subject still being "girl" as a dialectical difference between Boston and Los Angeles. I can even get over not knowing who's singing 90-95% of the time, as their harmony is still good. But what I can't forgive is the lack of liveliness and sparkle to their songs.

I love the boybands I do for their ability to inject color into my imagination. I want the old 'Kids back. I'm not sure I like the ones who wear monochrome and business suits in their photo shoots. It's not avante garde... it's boring and staid. Which is not what music should be.

Trying not to feel betrayed. Hoping Wednesday's concert will be better than I'm currently thinking.

It probably shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone who knows me that I have extremely questionable taste in music. In fact, I often envy my Wonderful Husband's eclectic taste and [livejournal.com profile] racerxmachina's far more meaningful taste. But in the end I remain who I am, a rock/pop girl with leanings toward the music of the '50s through '90s. And more recently, due to the positive influence of Princess Tutu, I've finally started listening to a bit of classical.

Now, the first concert I ever went to "on my own" (ie, not going with my parents and sister to see The Grateful Dead) was The New Kids On The Block. This was back in early high school, so it probably would have been 1990-91...? And while times have come and gone and NKOTB long ago disbanded, eventually I got hooked by boybands again, specifically *N Sync and Backstreet Boys. For the most part it's fluffy music, happy and poppy and, as was once writ of something else, signifying nothing.

Being just a little bit cynical, I reacted with amusement when I heard that NKOTB was getting back together, fifteen years on. I mean, 40-something-year-olds in a boy band. There's a good joke or three in that, I'm sure. Not to mention that I'd thought the chances of getting Jon Knight back on stage were, well, let's just say "slim to none." But I guess he's overcome his problems because I just bought my concert ticket.

October 8th, Staples Center, me and several thousand other 30-40-year-old women, screaming like we're 16 again. It's a date.

Though I still wonder how much dancing they're going to be able to do. ^_^;

Grr.

Did not write tonight. Instead, started work on the current project, only to break a needle. Then a second one four inches later, both of them hitting the walking foot. Given that I was having problems with the walking foot on the kitten quilt too, I think I may need a new one. As well as more needles. ^_^;;

After giving that up for the night, I sat down and read through two of the three books I'd checked out of the library. The first was Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs which I got for nostalgia's sake; the second was Lance Bass's memoir Out of Sync, which I got for curiosity's sake. I don't know if it's ghostwritten or not, but I like the writer's voice almost as much as I dislike the voice of the guy who did the introduction. Yes, I appreciate that his coming out as gay was a big, important thing in his life. I admire him for it. That said, it doesn't need to be capitalized and have a flag waving behind it. I dislike any movement that's shoved in my face, whether it be Gay Rights, Feminism, or If You Don't Believe In Jesus You Will Burn In Hell Like The Sinner You Are. I respect all of these political and cultural movements and more, but the moment they start forcing their agendas on me, acting like I'm not an intelligent person capable of reaching their conclusions on my own, they overstep their boundaries, adding insult to poor manners. But as I said, I like the memoir itself....

Back from Costume College. Enjoyed the heck out of it, learned a lot, already signed up for next year. More later, when I can reflect on what I've learned. Currently creativity is being focused, due to the onslaught of WorldCon sewing projects commencing. Today I have molded acorns and cut and fray-checked leaves.

Also got an e-mail today from someone I don't immediately recognize begging me for information about whether or not Howie Dorough of BSB is gay. Um. While I appreciate the maenedic franticity of fandom, how am I supposed to know? While still a fan, I'm out of the fandom. The only reason I knew about Lance Bass of *N Sync being gay was because the DJ mentioned it during my morning drive to work. And I've since read the article in People and concluded that *N Sync isn't reforming any time soon. Mainly from Lance's crack about "I should call Justin and tell him I'm gay" with the inference that he would hopefully be doing so before the issue hit the newsstands. Yeah, real group solidarity there. So, for the record, I don't know if anyone (aside from Lance) is gay. Or bisexual. A few of them I assume are somewhat straight, given the married-with-kids thing. And also for the record, I really don't care. The reason Lance being gay pleases me is not because he is, but because he seems to feel he's in a place where he can admit it not only to his family and friends but the world at large as well. I never thought I'd see a boy band member admitting publicly to homosexuality during the time frame when there was any chance of their career continuing. So what pleases me is not with whom anyone partners, but that they can accept it and that they hope others can as well.

My name is Kristin, and I'm both bisexual and married to a wonderful man. Thank you, and good evening.
