Since we're kitten-sitting, and the bigger cats have decided they don't like Rey (no surprise; strange kitten in THEIR household!), the kitten is getting shut in the shower room at night. Which does have the side effect of making it unavailable to us, especially since her food/water/litterbox/bed are set up in the shower. So last night, for the first time, the remodelled master bath got used for something other than Squiddle's baths.

In short, I think we picked a good showerhead. ^_^ We may need a liner shower curtain, though. The pretty decorative one doesn't adhere well to wet wall; water can get beyond it onto the floor.

Since it was going to hit the low 100s yesterday (I think Anaheim's high for the day was, in fact, 106), Squiddle and I went down to my parents' place in Fountain Valley for the day. Which was still a touch oppressive, getting up to 96, but better than here. They don't have central air either, so when Squiddle started getting unhappy with the heat, I stripped him naked and let him run around in their shower a couple of times, just putting him back into his diaper in between. Cooler toddler = less whiny toddler. Stayed down there into the evening, when Wonderful Husband arrived from work. We went out to dinner and drove home; Squiddle was asleep before we even got back to our hot house, and barely woke up as I changed him into an overnight diaper and put him to bed, opening doors and windows along the way to let the house breathe and vent out its heat.

Fortunately the temperature dropped overnight, so we slept with the windows open. The portable aircon unit makes it hard for me to sleep when we use it, as it cycles up and down all night long. Right now the house is quite pleasant, but it's probably time to shut it up for the day. It's supposed to still be hot, but not nearly as bad as yesterday. And we're going to my parents' again today, if nothing else then to collect the kitten whom we get to kitten-sit over the next several days while my parents go visit their boat. Half the time Squiddle likes petting and playing with Rey, half the time he's upset by her chasing him....

Yep, as expected, Dr. Arora ordered a three-hour blood glucose test for me. Which needs ten hours of fasting beforehand! So my parents minded Alexander this morning while I took care of that. It involved: blood draw; drink bottle of orange glucola; wait an hour; another blood draw; wait an hour; another blood draw; wait an hour; another blood draw. It was half past one before I was free to go and finally have food/breakfast/lunch. Oddly, though, I wasn't actually hungry at any point. More just feeling like I should be hungry.

On the way home I stopped at the farm stand between home and my usual hospital and picked up the flat of #2 (smaller) berries I'd phoned and asked they put aside for me. They have the best berries. Tomorrow begins the annual jam-making!

Tonight was quilt guild. I got asked if I can take over Block of the Month, as the woman who runs that and the Quilts For Kids group and is Parlimentarian has suddenly been promoted and has to move to NorCal within a month. Apparently this happens every time she's Parlimentarian? Last time it involved her moving to Afghanistan for a year! I told the guild president I'd think about it and talk to Jill about what it involves. I think it's light enough duty that I could handle it, even with chibi #2 appearing in September... the only bit that might be tricky is having to get to the meetings about forty minutes earlier than I currently do.

And my parents are going out of town in a couple weeks, so they've asked us to kitten-sit. That will be a fun exercise in logistics, with two cats of our own and a toddler. But Squiddle was playing nicely (under supervision) with Rey today, so maybe all I have to worry about is how my two cats will react to the temporary interloper....

Still sick, but much improved today. Nonetheless, not going to take Squiddle to his class this morning. No need for me to pass this on to a roomful of toddlers and their parents. And it's only a two-week break until the class starts up again in summer anyway.

Wonderful Husband is working from home today, a respite from the ridiculous hours the rest of his hell-week has had him keeping. Letting him have a lie-in for another half hour until he needs to get up for his first conference call meeting. I'll probably take a nap this afternoon when Squiddle does.

Doctor's appointment today for a Rhogam shot. I'm Rh-negative and Wonderful Husband isn't (neither is Squiddle), which means the mismatch can cause pregnancy complications. The shots hurt, but less than the alternative would, so que sera sera.

And it turns out the little boy kitten my mother was adopting is in fact a little girl kitten! Since usually the visual inspection (a colon or an exclamation mark on the behind) is enough to determine this, it came as something of a surprise to Mom when the pound called her after the kitten got fixed to report that inside, the kitten had the other set of plumbing. My mother's taking her anyway (it's a CAT, it's been fixed, does gender even matter?), and I'm for some reason finding it vastly amusing that my mother has a trans kitten.

Went to the new quilt guild meeting this morning. Had a great time. The members were friendly (though I suspect at 39, I was the youngest person in the room - but then that's almost true of my other quilt guild as well) and the guest speaker was great. I wish I was able to take her class tomorrow! But (a) I hadn't cleared babysitting Squiddle with my mother, and (b) the class was full anyway.

I'd actually been to this guild before, something like fifteen years ago when was taking my grandmother to it. But that's a lifetime ago! The main reasons I hadn't been attending it since I got back into quilting were (a) daytime meetings, thereby necessitating child care for Squiddle, and I do not want to take my parents for granted in that respect, and (b) the fact that it's second Wednesday morning of the month meetings - and my other guild is second Tuesday evening of the month meetings. Which mean most months (though not this one) the meetings will be back to back! But I had a really good time, so I'm glad I'd decided ahead of time to pay full membership dues rather than just be a visitor/guest for my first meeting.

After that, and after lunch with my parents and Skyping my inlaws so they could see Squiddle open a package they'd sent to him, my mother, Squiddle, and myself went off to the Orange County Animal Shelter so my mother could visit and adopt a kitten she'd bonded with. "Her" cat was killed by a pack of coyotes a couple weeks ago. One of her neighbors has a security camera and caught it on tape. Never let anyone tell you there isn't wildlife in the middle of suburbia! But she was ready, and the two-month-old black kitten was active, curious, and friendly. Squiddle wanted to hold him, but we agreed that was a bad idea - he can pet the kitten (thus far nameless) when someone else is holding him, but not hold him his very own self.

Downside to the day: seem to've caught Squiddle's headcold from the other day. Or, at least, I have a scratchy throat, no energy to make dinner, little want to sew, and not overmuch desire to go to my writing class tonight. :(

ETA: Definitely sick. Not a good week for this.

So about twenty feet down the fence from the demon bougainvilla is a patch of asparagus fern. Not having much use for asparagus fern, it like the bougainvilla is eventually slated to come out. Yesterday evening, however, I discovered that it is where Greystoke moved her kittens.

Hooray they're not under the house!!! That means this weekend we can scare out the cats that are under the house (probably Bond and Ninja) and fix that wonky grate and not have to worry about kittens being left in there and not have to worry about critters under our house! Huzzah!

Cuddled all six kittens--still only one has eyes open. Experienced miniature earthquake. Finished long book (review coming... tomorrow). Sewed dress bodice finally. Turned it right side out and stuck a gazillion pins back in. Going to bed now, dealing with the rest tomorrow.

My sister is awesome. She came up to our place this evening to get my husband to do some mysterious computery thing for her, and to see the kittens. She managed to talk Greystoke into being calm and letting us not only pet the babies, but even pick them up! They're all as soft as cotton balls and would fit inside a coffee mug, they're so bitty. One of the "white" two (being as much white as black, where the other four are mostly black) has its eyes open but its siblings don't yet. The other "white" one (dubbed "Cupcake" by my sister) has the most interesting facial markings and I'll be intrigued to see what he/she/it looks like as it continues to grow. Two of the black ones have nigh-identical tuxedo-with-socks markings, one is pure black, and the last is tuxedo-with-a-stripe-up-its-face. I need to find homes for all this adorableness....

Meh.

Weather has finally cooled off. Thank god. I checked my potted plants this morning and though some of them definitely show signs of "crisping" I think the ones who've survived until now will recover. I took the time to plant seeds to replace those that didn't make it... or in some cases never sprouted. Hopefully the habeneros will come up because I now have no more of those seeds! But the corn and melons and cucumbers are sprouting, and the basil and dill surprised me by also starting to poke their heads aboveground.

...Just gotta start prepping beds to put all this bounty in, eventually.

Kittens continue to number six. They're bigger now and more active and I think eyes are starting to open, but I didn't really get a chance to check that this morning as Greystoke was there glaring at me. (The mama has finally developed a defend-the-kittens instinct. Not that I've ever been fool enough to touch her babies and leave my scent on them; I look and admire only.)

Since it was finally cool enough to try on my dress mockup last night and make some alterations, I'd much rather be at home sewing (or digging up a garden) right now. ;_; But we can't always have what we want, can we....

Sushi is already developing the keen instincts that all sewers' cats have--IE, get in the middle of any project involving any sort of textile. However, he is clearly failing his ninja roll as he is a white kitten among black fabric. To quote, "More like a NON-ja. Terrible what passes for a ninja these days."

Sushi and his sister (named either Solaris or Boba) both got brought into the office today so that they can go in after work for (1) the second part of their deworming, (2) tests for FiV/FeLV, and (3) their first round of shots.

...Despite the fact that they weighed exactly the same two weeks ago, Sushi is now significantly bigger than his sister. Which leads to me wondering if I've been overfeeding him or underexercising him, or if this is normal. Something to ask the veterinarian, I guess.

The kitten has at least temporarily been named "Sushi" on the basis that he's white on the outside and frequently has fish inside him.

I've also added some pictures of my always-in-progress patio garden. I got inspired to take 'em on Tuesday when I glanced out there and Paris was staring up at a hummingbird that had perched on my (dead) pea vines. Which got taken out this morning so I can put another crop in there instead.

More names that have been considered: Sprite (for the soot sprite smushed atop his head), Licorice, Little F*ck, Miles (for the hyperactive tendancies), Lim, London (to go with Paris), Paper (for the number he's done on both a receipt and a paper crane)....

Names remain being tossed about for the kitten. Spot, Smudge, Casper, Gandalf, Shadowfax, Stoli, and Kaijuu have all been tossed about but none seem just right. Kitten is marginally dumb about eating. Goes a little something like this: I set him down in front of food. He goes "Oh, I'm not interested" and turns away. I scoop a little up on my fingers and hold it under his nose. He goes "Well, okay, just a bite. If you insist." He eats what's on my fingers. When the teeth come into play, I plunk him down in front of the food bowl again. Him: "OM NOM NOM" for several minutes.

Unrelated to kitten-ness, do any of the writing-type people who read this tend to hang out on AIM in the evenings and on weekends? I'm rather missing having people to talk creative stuff with.... My nick there is the same as on this blog.

*stress*

I'd forgotten just how much stress taking care of a kitten causes! They're so small (1.2 pounds) compared to adult cats that anything that goes wrong goes wrong FAST. Spot has a touch of diarrhea, possibly caused by the deworming stuff or possibly from something else. I'm worried that he's not eating and drinking enough. Plus he was separated from his sister today and I'm keeping him away from Paris until he gets tested for FiV/FeLV in two weeks. Two weeks of isolation for a baby! At least I'm pretty sure that he's okay for a warm place to sleep... I put the cat carrier half on the heating pad (on low) and lined the sides with towels. Maybe I'll try mixing up some kitten formula in the morning and thinning out the solid kitten food with that to see if he likes it better that way....

Blackie was rereleased at work today and boy did he ever scramble. I also picked up Ash's siblings and... they're more than twice as big as he was. Poor baby probably never stood a chance. They're currently dubbed Lock, Stalk, and Barrel, and I'll be taking them to see some of the people who do local kitten fostering in the morning. I should do it myself, but... I just can't. Ash is too raw in my heart right now. Chess is apparently a wild cat, not a domestic stray, but I'll be minding her for ten days nonetheless come Friday morning, which is the condition of the vet releasing her from the hospital that day.

I've finished the primary run-through of Moebius 30 and other than wanting to strangle Teppei (technobabble is NOT my translation cup of tea) it went fairly well. Between Wikipedia and an online Japanese-English dictionary, I even managed to nail the weaponry attacks. Because, y'know, "warhead" just wasn't in any of my Japanese vocab lessons in college. That said, the next time I catch [livejournal.com profile] sandpanther on IM, I'm so pestering her for help with certain terms and sentences. And Wonderful Husband has been sucked into our project and is learning how to do subtitling. Yay! Now we just need a project name....

Oh, and I have curry. Finally. ^_^

R.I.P. Ash

Ash is dead. He passed away in my arms about twenty minutes ago. I don't feel as bad about this as I expected to. We took him home from the hospital and did the best we could, but I guess he was just too small and weak. Which is not to say it doesn't still hurt a lot. We'll burying him tomorrow under one of the rosebushes in my parents' yard.

Strange how someone you've known less than a week can become so dear....
sakon76: (Default)
Ash has survived the night's hypoglycemic episode with judicious use of cuddling, hot water bottles, and Karo syrup. He ate a little bit and drank a little bit but he's not in the clear yet, and I should take him to a vet today. So of course the only local vet I know about is booked up until Tuesday....
