Because I am apparently hard-wired to speculative fiction, even in a fandom that just plain isn't SF/F... Rated R for one sex scene.

Haha, just finished writing the last chapter of Shadowlands. It clocks in at 3,491 words right now, pending editing. It's almost twice the length of any of the other chapters, so I will need to consider whether or not it should be two chapters. And I got in all the stuff I had long planned for it, and some stuff came up that, WHAT?! Where did this come from? Because this is such good stuff! I just wish I could claim that *I* had planned it and not the story itself. Because it hearkens back to things in other chapters and, wow....

In other words, GOD I'VE MISSED WRITING AND ALL ITS WACKINESS.

Bed now. Editing later.

There's a meme which occasionally goes around my tumblr which details the motivations for one's actions, an overwhelming percentage of which is spite.

A couple days ago I got an anonymous comment from ff.net on my RotG fic "Shadowlands." Which is one chapter from completion and has been so since Christmas 2014. (Yes, four years. I have two little boys; stringing narrative sentences together is hard with energetic distractions under 4'.)

The comment concluded "even tho, ya know, this is never getting updated ever again and whatever".

...

O NO U DIDN'T.

The gauntlet has been thrown.

Challenge accepted, bitch.

387 words, or roughly a fifth of the chapter, written last night.

Spite is indeed a powerful motivator.

I want to write fanfiction. (Probably not going to happen. My concentration is SHOT these days.) I can't find a way to fit the Bumblebee movie satisfactorily into Bayverse, and thus Simulacra'verse, shy of Bumblebee sidling up to Lennox and suggesting "I know this mechanic you should hire..." But where it would go from there, I have no idea.

What I do have an idea for is that after the events of Bumblebee, every so often Charlie gets a phone call. There's no one on the other end of the line. But there's a buzzing like a little bumblebee. And maybe a snippet of song. Maybe Lionel Ritchie? "I just called / to say / I love you...." And she knows who it is. So Charlie talks. She tells Bee what's going on in her life. It's a one-sided conversation. And it goes on for years. It only happens when he thinks he's safe. When he thinks he won't be traced, or can get out of Dodge fast, because who knows if Sector 7 is still monitoring Charlie. But it's enough for both of them. Because it has to be enough.

Until one day the Autobots finally have a base, and a treaty, and he can openly be friends with her again without endangering her from her own people.

(The Decepticons, of course, are another story. But then they always are.)

So there's a little headcanon for a fanfiction I'll probably never get to write, but y'all feel free to enjoy it and make it your own as well if you want.

I have been doing a lot of posts on editing Queen's Choice recently, for much the same reason as why I posted about going to the gym a lot when I first started: public accountability. It keeps me motivated! And I feel like I had a pretty good run over the weekend, getting thirty-four pages of edits from my teacher and classmates moved from on-the-desk to atop-the-shredder. At fifteen-plus copies for each ten pages, they're cross-stacked in two piles a foot deep. I would like those 11.5"x11.5" pieces of desktop real estate back.

I want to get an editing run done through Queen's Choice before I start on the next book (working title, aka I have no idea what else to call it, "Field of Stars". Because naming it King's Somethingorother or Queen's Somethingorother, appealing as it is to have matching titles, gives away the end of the first book). I want to sell these. I want to be a published author. Unfortunately, being so heavily into this project means that others suffer. I also want to be writing Transformers fanfic, specifically hammering Deus Ex Machina into shape now that I know what's actually going on in it.

But there are only twenty-four hours in a day. I need eight of them for sleep, another eight for my job, and two more for the commute. Leaving six, which also get to encompass two meals and making sure the house doesn't devolve too far into a slovenly pit. So... fanfic may be on hold until I've completed this editing pass. To my friends and readers, if it works out that way, I'm sorry. But this project is really important to me, so I hope you'll understand. And I hope that I can get an agent and a publisher and that someday you'll be able to read the original world I've been building and having fun in, and that you'll like it too.

In the meantime, I have my file of notes for Deus Ex Machina so I won't forget what I want to do. And I don't think my ambitions to go professional writer can ever eradicate my fanfic writer tendencies. One of the earliest stories I can remember telling myself was a GoBots fanfic; I've been into fanfiction almost as long as I've been into reading!

All of this navel-gazing brought to you because of [livejournal.com profile] seanan_mcguire's excellent post about the value of fanfiction to a writer. Go read! I like her stance that it's not either-or. But I know myself, and I'm lower output than she is, and I have to concentrate on one project at a time to the exclusion of all others, or else I will never get any of them done.

Wish me luck. And feel free to nag me about going to the gym.

I come to my desk in the middle of the morning with a stomach full of breakfast cereal and a pot of licorice mint tea. I've been blasting through Princess Tutu this week at the rate of a disc a day. I blame this both on the excellent AMV I saw at Fanime, and on the fact I have a Edel costume in the works. Unfortunately, this is going to come to an end after (if) I manage to purchase disc five today. Well, theoretically there are the fansubs around here somewhere so I can use those to get to the end of the story. The ends of stories being important things, you see, as Fakir is discovering.

Somehow I've also started fanficcing the series (despite not having reached its end, generally a bad idea). I already know some of what I've written will need changing and I have a vague idea of how, but I think it will work. As the song says, after all, "every new beginning comes from some other beginning's end." I actually ended up discussing fanfiction with the clerk at DVD Planet last night, when I was purchasing disc four of Tutu (they were sold out of five so he put in a reorder) and the director's cut of Kingdom of Heaven. It came up because Goonies was playing on the TV behind him and I have this vague urge to cross over Goonies and Pirates of the Caribbean. It's do-able... either One-Eyed Willie meets up with Jack&Co. in PotC time, or... well, we know there are curses and such that would make having PotC charas swaggering around in modern time a viable option as well. The main problem for me would be writing Capt. Sparrow. Straight-forward characters are easy, but his motivations, mindset, and mannerisms are... well, chaotic, shall we say. But that idea's pretty low on Muse's list anyway.

Finished the hand-sewing of seam finishes during three discs' worth of Card Captor Sakura. I was good and left the subs off. ^_^ And I got hit withthe last scene for the current "Tales from a Ramen Stall" story, so I'm going to have to get back to that at some point.

Somewhat relatedly, it being anime as well, I adore Saiunkoku Monogatari. It's easily the best show I'm watching this season. I just hit episode seven and another "aha! good thing I was paying attention in the first episode; there was a test!" moment. Plus two more moments toward the end that made me hit pause for each because I was laughing so hard.
