On Chocolate And Allergies
Feb. 11th, 2008 08:31 amOne of the things that is usually a low-grade annoyance but becomes a greater one at this time of year is chocolate. Now, my Wonderful Husband has a peanut/tree nut allergy, which is one of those ones that really doesn't come in the version "mild." Thus I have long since given up Thai food, peanut butter sandwiches, and have to brush my teeth after having some M&Ms. Because, really, accidentally poisoning him is Not Good. He will not get sick; he will die.
Something like 95% of chocolate manufacturers put a "may contain traces of" or "manufactured on shared equipment with" warnings on their products. Which, really, I appreciate. However, it occurs to me that someone, somewhere out there, surely has had to have had the brainstorm that says "hey, people with nut allergies might like to eat chocolate too!" and set up a nut-free factory.
Apparently not.
We've managed to find a brand of chocolate chips (Smart and Final's house brand, for reference) that we can use for chocolate chip cookies. However, Nestle's? Out. Ghiradelli's? Out. All those gourmet single-source chocolate bars with add-ins like ginger or cocoa nibs or mint that are all over the stores these days? Out.
It makes making truffles or even chocolate cake very difficult. Grr. Stupid manufacturers.
