KRW 9-10

These two episodes seem to be trying (perhaps a bit too hard?) to make up for the relative crappiness of the last two.

I like the whole emotional heart of Shoutarou not being able to tell Akiko about her dad. I like how it parallels the case they're on. I like Sonozaki family members getting a clue as to W. I LOVE Shoutarou possibly (probably; he is actually good at his job for a reason) grasping the clue in the museum. And I LOVE Phillip and Shoutarou having a conversation that's not about the case. It's almost like a Bechdel test.

I kind of felt like Akiko was living too much in her own personal idiom (the way she whacked Shoutarou for doing repeatedly in the first two eps), and that she had definitely been watching too many detective animes, but OTOH, Shoutarou seeing her father in her was a rather nice touch. These two episodes were heavily based on needing to know what happened in "Begins Night" which the adverts seem to indicate Would All Be Revealed, Just Go See The Movie! Is everything actually laid out in the series itself, or do I need to hunt down a copy of the movie to d/l too? I do plan to eventually get this entire series on DVD (the way I have Moebius and Kuuga; still working on completing Agito), but that's going to wait until it's all actually out on DVD....

Tonight being of the "oh frag it neither of us is in the right physical/mental zone for cooking" idiom, Wonderful Husband and I walked in the direction of our local Carl's Jr. And then I looked across the street from it at what appeared to be a hole-in-the-wall Japanese place, and we ended up there instead. Nice list of sushi rolls, less of a list on the nigiri-zushi. He had a chicken bowl (served in a styrofoam takeout box), I had spicy ramen (basically ramen in egg drop soup, I think, but at least served in a real bowl) and we split some gyoza. Surprisingly no tea options for beverages. Overall not the best hole-in-the-wall Japanese food ever, but it's definitely now on our list for "oh frag it, TAKEOUT" nights.

Watched Kamen Rider W 7-8 tonight. Much though I appreciate the hints at larger plot (hmm, an organization is after Philip?), and fun to watch though the dancing was, these two episodes felt... lacking. Chizuru's motivation and WTH she didn't tell her partner anything in particular bugged me. And, frankly, an enemy that can do what this one did in 7 should really not have been defeated by what happened in 8. *rolls eyes* Also, nice tired cliche on doujinshi artists.

Toku Slash

I've started watching Kamen Rider W. This is, actually, all [livejournal.com profile] hoshikage's fault. Which is not really a change.

So, four episodes in I'm still trying to decide if it's slashy or not. Oh, I can see where it could be... but ATM I'm getting "platonic slash" vibes from it, if that even makes any sense. (I'm also thinking that Philip occasionally gives Mirai a run for it in the "cute blond-ness" category.)

This led to a conversation last night wherein I ranked W as third slashiest of the toku shows I've seen (Moebius, Kuuga, W, Agito; in that order). Wonderful Husband actually disagreed with me, saying that Kuuga was slashier than Moebius. I love that we have discussions like that and can both actually support our arguments. (For reference, Agito? Is not very slashy at all. No matter how cute Hikawa's actor is.)

Things I have thus far learned from watching toku:

The Japanese have a genetic predisposition toward weak legs and poor balance, thus leading them to stumble and fall while running away from monsters. (Alternately, [livejournal.com profile] haamel has a theory that "Footing is very bad in Japan. This much is clear.")

The Japanese also lack a self-preservation instinct, causing them to flee said pursuit to abandoned rather than populated locations, and to stop and *watch* the giant monster fights.

More to come as I think of them. And the chat line of the evening has to be "Captain Crayfish, save me!"

Still alive.

Went on Sunday with [livejournal.com profile] hoshikage and two of my cousins to the California Renaissance Faire, which now has the distinction of being the tiniest renfaire I've ever been to. Practically postage stamp sized. But we saw Sound and Fury perform the smuttiest rendition of "Testecles and the Sack of Rome" yet and had a good time.

[livejournal.com profile] hoshikage has been using her visit to show me the wonders of Ultraman Moebius. In return, I pester her for more fic and she writes it. This is all working out wonderfully well, I feel. So now I have once again stepped down the dark, dangerous path of tokusatsu shows. Le'sigh.
