These two episodes seem to be trying (perhaps a bit too hard?) to make up for the relative crappiness of the last two.

I like the whole emotional heart of Shoutarou not being able to tell Akiko about her dad. I like how it parallels the case they're on. I like Sonozaki family members getting a clue as to W. I LOVE Shoutarou possibly (probably; he is actually good at his job for a reason) grasping the clue in the museum. And I LOVE Phillip and Shoutarou having a conversation that's not about the case. It's almost like a Bechdel test.

I kind of felt like Akiko was living too much in her own personal idiom (the way she whacked Shoutarou for doing repeatedly in the first two eps), and that she had definitely been watching too many detective animes, but OTOH, Shoutarou seeing her father in her was a rather nice touch. These two episodes were heavily based on needing to know what happened in "Begins Night" which the adverts seem to indicate Would All Be Revealed, Just Go See The Movie! Is everything actually laid out in the series itself, or do I need to hunt down a copy of the movie to d/l too? I do plan to eventually get this entire series on DVD (the way I have Moebius and Kuuga; still working on completing Agito), but that's going to wait until it's all actually out on DVD....

You can mostly figure out what happens in the movie just from the series, but there's some stuff you'd miss out on. Particularly a chunk of character development for Shoutarou. Just skip the first Decade section, and don't try to make the final combo section make any sense at all... don't skip it completely, there's a nice W-related scene at the end, but you could probably skim through most of it on fast-forward and not miss much of anything. (Watching that movie made me realize all over again how truly godawful Decade is. *shudder*)

At least the movie shouldn't be too hard to find for DL until DVDs become an option... :)
