Have found the perfect garment for "housebound and pregnant during the summer": sarongs. Fortunately, due to my mother bringing me back souveniers from Jamaica for a few years running, I have a lovely collection.

(My beloved elastic and drawstring waist skirts just keep refusing to stay atop the belly curve. Most ungrateful of them.)

(No, the subject line does not refer to my estate sale shopping hobby. For once.)

I have not gone shopping for certain wardrobe staples in years. Those things without which we are vaguely less comfortable in so many ways. Physical, psychological, you name it. Yes, friends, I am talking about panties and socks.

The problem is that Mervyn's doesn't exist anymore. And Mervyn's was, IMO, by far the best of the middle-class department stores. (Orange County is lousy with Macy's and Bloomingdale's and Neiman Marcus; myself, I prefer paying the mortgage each month). Kohl's has, of course, swooped in to fill the retail gap left by Mervyn's, but, honestly, I don't like the quality of what they sell. I have not purchased a single garment there that has not had the hem come loose within five wearings. Not best impressed.

But then Already Pretty linked to this post and my jaw just about dropped at how gorgeous that dress is and how well it suits a
a curvy figure. I noted that it was from JC Penny's. My sister had given me a gift card to Penny's, possibly for my last birthday, or possibly the one before that. Either way, enabling!

So off I went, and discovered that Penny's has a decent selection of clothing for the curvaceous. Also, panties and socks! Though the panties (plain, cotton, multi-pack) cost about $7 each. Four pair of black socks cost as much as a single pair of undies! Highway robbery?

The store I went to didn't have the exact dress from the blog post (alas), but for all I know it's from last year. The store did have some cute things, though, and I tried on a few. Going on William Morris' maxim "Have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful," I ended up getting a maxi dress with a short jacket top that renders it suitable for office wear. I think it and I work well in combination.

And now I have new undies.

The classic Chanel jacket. I don't get it. Why do so many women look at this as the ultimate in style and chic? It's a boxy jacket made of ugly, lumpy fabric, and it absolutely does not flatter a woman with curves. In fact, I'm not certain I've ever seen anyone wear the style and not look dowdy.

Can anyone explain to me the appeal?

So on my birthday I rose, dressed, and ruthlessly purged my closet of most garments I no longer wear or fit. There's a dress I'm still waffling on, and I still have the dresser to go through (maybe tonight or tomorrow). But it feels oddly freeing to have that space and no longer have the expectations of clothing I don't wear weighing me down. This also gives me space to add things to my wardrobe, a good number of which I hope to sew myself.

I find myself in the odd position of transitioning to a different style. For most of my life I've been a decidedly "casual tomboy" type, with t-shirts, blue jeans, and running shoes as my garments of choice despite my old cosplay leanings. A few months ago, however, I ended up purchasing a few skirts at a thrift store, and one of them in particular has become my favorite; I wear it no less than once a week. And for anywhere but at home, running shoes and t-shirts just don't work with long skirts. So I find myself moving toward slightly dressier, and definitely toward a vintage bend; so many vintage styles are simply classier than modern stuff. Not that this part comes as surprise to me, given my lifelong taste for old things* and the fact that I've been slowly collecting vintage and reporduction sewing patterns for a few years now....

So I don't know if I'm going to end up being one of those people who dresses completely retro every day (probably unlikely; I have no clue about vital things like hair and especially makeup, and finding vintage-esque shoes with a 1-2" heel is a bitch; why oh why must they all have 3" heels?) or just spice up my wardrobe with retro flair.

In the meantime, at least I'm enjoying the ride.

* - direct quote from my very modern-leaning Wonderful Husband last weekend, when I was admiring a Hoosier cabinet: "You and I are very different people." Which, well, yes in some ways. And no in others. Which is a marital strength, I think.

Spent most of the day wandering through Cambridge. Saw a lot of nice books and historical prints in the antique bookstore, but nothing I wanted for the price they were asking. Got snowed on, which I think is a first for our holiday visits here! Did lunch at the Castle, then had our traditional climb of Castle Hill. Did more shopping, including (finally) a stop at Bravissimo, which is a UK store chain that specializes in mostly lingerie and a little bit of clothing for us larger ladies. I had a fitting, which led to the fascinating revelation that I have been wearing an incorrect bra size for my entire adult life. Formerly 38DD, I am now a 36GG. I walked out with six relatively pricey but vastly better fitting bras, including one sports bra which actually prevents bounce. When I get home, everything else goes in the charity donations bag. ^_^

On our annual clothing-shopping expedition this year, I got four pairs of trousers at Kohls. Thus far this week, a leg hem has failed on each of two different pairs. Now, this is neither difficult nor time-consuming to fix. It is, however, annoying, and leaves me marginally less inclined toward shopping there in the future.
