The classic Chanel jacket. I don't get it. Why do so many women look at this as the ultimate in style and chic? It's a boxy jacket made of ugly, lumpy fabric, and it absolutely does not flatter a woman with curves. In fact, I'm not certain I've ever seen anyone wear the style and not look dowdy.

Can anyone explain to me the appeal?

Jackie-O made it look good, but no, I don't see the appeal. They look like hell on me and I don't like them.

I had someone explain to me that a classic Chanel jacket always looked good even if you were walking or sitting or moving and that's why it became a classic. The jacket never looks rumpled or creased or messy, so you always look fresh.

I still don't get it. *shrugs* I think I never will, but I'm a jeans/t-shirts/sneakers kind of gal and I do not like dressing up, so that's a big strike against a Chanel suit in my life.

Um . . . they remind people of the "simpler times" back in the 50's, and people are nostalgic? IDEFK Agreeing with everyone else - they're ugly as hell.

Dunno. My mom makes it look good, but she's 1, not curvy, and 2, kind of classic-bordering-on-frumpy style-wise...

Wow, I hadn't realized just how ugly that jacket was until I clicked the link. My eyes, my eyes!

I've got a couple of classic women's business suits (Pendleton) cut in the Chanel style and I love them. However, these are business suits in business suit fabric and colors and with little styling/decoration - certainly not the ugly gaudy stuff in the article linked to. I've found the cut works much better on me than a more traditional business suit/blazer. I see a lot of women managers/execs wearing this style, actually (the cut at least) and looking pretty good in it.

I agree that the examples in the link are SPECTACULARLY ugly in terms of fabric and detailing. Yukk!

Yes, the fabric and embellishments on the suits pictured are crap. Looking at original suits provides a clearer view of the classic. Also, avoid looking at modern suits designed by Skeletor, I mean, Karl Lagerfeld.

Don't look at that jacket. Seriously, Coco would have yanked half the crap off that jacket.

The cardigan jacket debuted in 1925, and, as with a lot of modern fashion, especially 20's fashion, It Helps if You're Skinny. The cachet surrounding the item lends significance-- it was considered androgynous sportswear. It moved with the wearer and didn't require bustles or corsets for its shape to hold. Wearing it was a statement of freedom and independence.

The reason why "Chanel-style" suits look boxy on modern wearers is that most people are wearing off-the-rack knockoffs that are not tailored to their figures. The stiff fabric falls off their curves, rather than being molded to them. The actual suits were 100% handmade to fit. Embellishments in Coco's lines were usually worn and draped jewelry, not stuck-on-the-suit bling.

There are some looks out there that compliment round figures and some that compliment thin ones. This one's just one of the latter, it seems.

I think the reason for the frills these days is so that women can be feminine without wearing skirts (it can seriously affect your pay and reputation).

It screams money. That's my opinion. XD

It is ugly as all hell though.
