Y'all remember that wedding dress I made for Armida? The one that took lots of weeks of my time and that I've been promising pictures of from today's wedding?

Wonderful Husband just got an e-mail from Armida saying that last night the dog broke out of his crate and savaged the dress.

Now while I'm sorry that a nice piece of clothing that I put a good deal of effort into has been destroyed right before its intended use, I can't even imagine what Armida is feeling right now....

So this is the explanation of why I won't have any pictures of the wedding dress for y'all.
sakon76: (Ahiru and Fakir)
So this evening, Wonderful Husband made dinner, I hammered out the last ten problem child lines on UM6 (including the next-episode preview and the MebiNavi), tossed it at [livejournal.com profile] sandpanther for a quick beta of the most egregious lines, ironed my work shirts, we put the laundry away, and I ironed Armida's wedding dress, snugged it on a hanger between tissue paper, and tossed a plastic cover over it so that it doesn't get dirty between now and the wedding. Wonderful Husband will deliver it to her tomorrow at work. And tomorrow I shall put up (finally!) some of the construction photos. For now I go thud. And somehow it seems like I did more than this short list, but I cannot think what it is. I do note, however, the absolute lack of any work on the Summoner outfit....

Still aching in all the "gardener's butt" places, but feeling remarkably good. Why, you ask? Because the wedding dress is done. I'm stitching together a dry-cleaners sample (for any dry-cleaners Armida needs to take it to to practice their chemicals on first to make sure the dress won't melt) and tonight I'm ironing the dress, and tomorrow Wonderful Husband is delivering it to her along with leftover fabric and a spool of ribbon for lacing. But it's done, it's done, it's done, with nearly two weeks until the wedding~!

The Summoner dress is largely constructed. To do on that:

cut out a mockup of a sleeve and make sure it'll work
cut out, trim, and sew on the actual sleeves
lacing holes for the back
a placket to go behind the lacing
hem the dress
make and sew on red trim lines for the front (match to the sleeves?)
make and sew on cross-lacing trim (match to sleeve/cloak trim)

Then I get to make the cloak and the headdress! ^_^

So I woke up this morning, somewhat later than usual (which I attribute to going to bed somewhat later than usual) and started to go about my day, only to discover I ached in places I don't usually ache unless I've been gardening or cutting out fabric on the floor. It is a testament to my fuzzy state of mind that it took until I was ironing seams flat on the Summoner dress before I realized that the reason I was aching was because, yes, I did cut out the Summoner dress yesterday.... I am not the swiftest on the uptake most days.

In any case, having reached a point of impasse yesterday, having to wait for the glue on the boning tips to dry before I could proceed with the wedding dress, I started in on my AX costume. For reference, AX is on Friday. We'll see if I can make it, especially since, having now finished said skirt seams, I'm back to the wedding dress.

So last night Armida came over for dinner and a wedding dress fitting, bringing her stepdaughter-to-be Jasmine with her. There was sabzi and salad and rolls, and we were amused by Armida asking if we ate like this every night, to which the answer, of course, was "no." If I was as good at cooking and time management as my mother, maybe, but I'm not there yet. Someday.

Then she and I went upstairs to the workroom where the dress was pinned to my dress form. Armida's first words were "I think I'm going to cry," which I'm choosing to interpret as I did a good job rather than a bad one. ^^;; Then she put on the appropriate shoes and underthings and tried on the dress and thank you dear God it fit correctly and we went out onto the patio so I could pin up the hem. While we were out there, our neighbor in the studio over the next-door garage had a visitor who happened to look down while he was on the stairs, see the fitting, and ask Armida if she was getting married. ^_^ Meanwhile, Wonderful Husband having ceded his Wii to Jasmine for the duration of the visit, he baked cookies. ^^;;

Work done yesterday: problem spots on skirt/bodice seam corrected and resewn; bodice lining slip-stitched to skirt lining; bodice underlayer topstitched; elastic sleeve bands sewn on and catch-stitched to the sleeve; sleeve edging lace begun to be trimmed.

Work left to be done: finish sleeve edging, attach; tack bodice overlayer to bodice underlayer; bone bodice center back; refinish skirt center back openings; set in lacing grommets; sew ribbon to top of lacing at center backs; hem skirt; hem skirt lining; spray out remaining blue construction marks; get garment dry-cleaned; deliver.

Bleeding on the wedding dress has finally occurred. Got my thumb with the needle while slip-stitching in the bodice lining, and it got on the lining. Luckily it's just the lining, yes? Dabbed saliva on it to keep it from setting, and it will hopefully come out when it's dry-cleaned. In any case, I'm superstitious enough that to me this means the dress will come out well and she'll be happy with it. Did a few fixes to the waist seam as well, topstitched the bodice underlayer (will pin and stitch the overlayer to it later, after I see it on her), and sewed the sleeve elastics in. Have pinned on the lacing strips, and the dress is currently back on my dressform, waiting for Armida to arrive and look at it before trying it on. Working with one of the edging cutouts for the sleeve cuffs while waiting for her... think I can make it work after all. Hopefully.

The house smells like the sabzi that's in the crockpot, and I have to reflect that I am probably a slightly odd person in that running out of things makes me happy. I've finished out two spools of thread on this dress thus far, and I finished out three different spices and the remaining ginger on making the sabzi this morning....

Was up sewing until one in the morning, partially aided and abetted by things such as my sewing machine's light burning out and me discovering that the replacement I'd bought at the supermarket was in fact the wrong size, necessitating a run to JoAnn's. Then there was the fact that I was sewing beaded, embroidered silk chiffon, which means (1) French seams for everything, baby!, (2) removing all the beads and sequins from within the seam allowances before sewing, and (3) realizing that it doesn't matter if that size nine needle on the machine was brand-new for this project, I need a brand-newer one for silk chiffon! Plus the "This needs a dart, doesn't it? There's no dart here on the pattern. Yet somehow, inexplicably, it requires one to work..." discovery. But the bodice got done and it got sewn into the underlying bodice and that got sewn to the skirts... involving along the way the breakage of two needles in two minutes at the exact same spot and I still cannot figure out why, since it wasn't hitting a bone and the third time (and needle) went fine....
sakon76: (Tsubomi)
All the skirt seams are now finished. Somehow, miraculously, I haven't actually bled on the dress yet. My index and middle fingertip on my right hand, though, are looking rather ragged and worse for wear. I know, I know... I should use a thimble. But for this I need to be able to feel the needle coming through the fabric. One more night of sewing and then she's coming over on Thursday for a fitting... good job I was never intending to have the grommets in the dress by then. Going to pin lacing strips on instead in case things need to be moved.

Watched some anime tonight, partially while sewing, partially during dinner, for the first time in a long time. Watched episodes 0-2 of Emma second season. They've added an extra character and some extra elements to the storyline, but thus far it's working okay for me in comparison to the manga. They've animated her ball dress in the opening, though they've gone for a paler color than I'd hoped. Ah well, it's still very pretty....

I also got my Costume College limited classes registration back today! I got all four I'd wanted... one on lady's dancing slippers, one on masquerade masks, one on silk ribbon embroidery, and one on crocheted wristlet gloves! Huzzah~!

But for now, it once again being Past My Bedtime, I'm calling it a night. Oyasumi nasai, all~!

Doing data entry at work again today. Have just reached the end of the "F"s! Only nineteen more letters' worth of files to enter....

Tipped the ends of the shorter side seam bones this morning before coming in to work. This led me to musings about I really should order more tips for 1/4" bones... and while I'm at it I should see if Greenberg and Hammer carries spiral boning by the pound as well.... I worry about myself sometimes. Then I consider people like [livejournal.com profile] twjudy, who takes metalsmithing classes to increase her costuming skills and step back and realize that, no, comparatively, I'm quite normal and sane.

I have a question for anyone out there who might be inclined to help me... what should I ask for this wedding dress? I very very seldom charge for my sewing work, so I don't have any kind of idea. But Armida wants me to give her a quote, and Wonderful Husband does too, and I have no idea what to say. I bought the pattern, so I'll ask her for the money back for that. But she bought the fabric. I've had to enlarge the pattern a very little, and tweak the bodice pattern down a little in the front, up a little in the back. There is hand-sewing going on for the seam finishes and probably a bit more for the edging of the sleeves. But, really, a fairly straight-forward job. Theoretically, one is supposed to use a stopwatch and charge by the hour. But... I don't have a stopwatch, and my sewing is while I'm doing other things too. So I have no idea of the actual time spent on this project. I also don't know what wedding dresses cost, having made my own.

Did not get much done tonight. Still, at Wonderful Husband's urging, I sewed the bodice fashion fabric to the bodice lining and discovered two of the bones I cut were too long. Have cut replacements and dipped them in tipping fluid, will glue on the tips in the morning. Sewed one of the skirt side seam finishes, again by hand. Have to report that heavy satin doesn't seem overfond of being seam finished by hand... but I managed. Skirt pinned back on mannequin, inside out tonight so I don't have to flip it when I do more seam finishing tomorrow. For now I go to bed....

Fricking A'.

The bodice pieces are all sewn together and I've moved on to the skirt lining. Only to discover that the side seams are on the bias, so if I attempt to flat-fell them by machine (my favorite seam finish, as it's strong, durable, and creates a minimum of bulk), they ripple.

Yes, that means I'm doing all the skirt seam finishes by hand....

[Update One, 2:46pm]: Two of the three lining seams finished, working on the third, which is center back and thus twice as long. I remain perpetually miffed that patterns so seldom include directions for seam finishes. Have also cut and tipped the bodice boning, so hopefully that'll be dry by this evening and I can glue the tips on and let the glue cure overnight. Lunch acquired and consumed. The needle I pulled out of my needle box for this is very fine and thus *very* sharp. Haven't bled on the dress yet, but am anticipating it as only a matter of time....

[Update Two, 5:04pm]: All skirt lining seams finished. Have pinned skirt backs together and pinned in the pleats on the skirt front. On the mockup the pleats on the right didn't fall correctly on Armida, but I held the skirt up on the approximate right place on my mannequin and they seem to fall okay, so hopefully correcting the front waist down an inch and working in a heavier fabric than the mockup has cured that problem. ^_^ Back to sewing.

[Update Three, 9:37pm]: Skirt pleats sewn. First piece (skirt godet) from fashion fabric #2 (embroidered beaded silk chiffon) cut out and sewn in. In fact, skirt all sewn so the next step for it is finishing all its seams. But for now, as it's almost bedtime, it's getting pinned to my mannequin so the bias can start stretching out. Pressing the chiffon is an interesting experience, BTW... my ironing board cover now has dimples all over it from the pearls. This is exactly why I have double thickness of covers on said board. Tips have been applied to the steel bones for the bodice; they'll be sewn in either tomorrow morning or evening, depending on how things go. For now, though, even if the dress isn't done, I'm rather satisfied with the work accomplished, and think it'll be ready for a fitting Thursday evening, as planned.

Lining fabric completely ironed. All pieces cut out.

Interlining fabric ironed. All pieces cut out.

Bitchy fashion fabric #1 ironed.

Have to cut pieces out of fashion fabric #1, iron fashion fabric #2, and cut pieces out of that. Hate this, but at least I know cutting is the worst part of the process... for now.

[Update One, 6:57pm]: All pieces of fashion fabric #1 cut. Dinner is in the oven, so this is my break point. I should probably figure out the changes to the pieces for fashion fabric #2 and cut them out after dinner, except that's beaded silk chiffon, which tends to fray a bit... ah well, I'm planning on sewing it all up tomorrow anyway, right?

[Update Two, 10:29pm]: Bodice lining all pinned together. Individual bodice fashion fabric pieces pinned to their interlining counterparts. The sewing machine is right over there, but I've hit the stage of tired where I can't think to talk straight, let alone trust myself to operate heavy machinery which has sharp pointy things stabbitying into fabric and potentially my fingers....

Last night, I wrote. And then I slept. And dreamt shinyshiny boyband dreams with [livejournal.com profile] seshat also in them. And then I woke. And the pain that has been plauging me most of the week was gone. And I had blueberries with my cornflakes. And I showered, sloughing away all the built up ick and filth and hatred of mankind. And it's Friday. Have I mentioned life is good?

I'm almost to the end of "Afterwards" 14.5. My muse can see it like an oncoming train headlight in a tunnel. And then I will be done with this story and free to go back and edit the last epic I wrote (which was, IIRC, the newest entry in the Ramen Stall universe). Unfortunately, my writing muse shall be denied ("But it's so close!" she protests; "I can taste it!") in favor of my sewing muse, now that I'm up and at 'em enough to finally cut out Armida's wedding dress. And this whole weekend is earmarked for sewing~! Because I want to have her come over for a fitting next week (the wedding is on 7/7/07, BTW). And if I'm really really good at it and kick ass, I intend to persuade Wonderful Husband sometime on Sunday that, yes, he really does need to go with me to the $2 theater and watch "Meet the Robinsons" with me. And tackle the 4-5 pieces in the mending pile and maybe dig through the futon WIP pile to see if I can find the Victorian corset pieces....

But before all this, I shall finish clearing off my desk at work here. ^_^
sakon76: (Godai and Ichijou)
Well, this weekend has been... semi-productive. Probably would have been more so if I hadn't been pretty much dead to doing anything yesterday.

I'd cut out a Civil War chemise on Tuesday and I finished it today (Simplicity 7215), experimenting along the way with Guterman's 100% cotton thread. Nice stuff, if very fine. I used some lace I had (probably polyester, but at least not egregiously shiny) and an old card of celery-colored silk ribbon for trimming. It's currently in the dryer together with the last of the laundry. Unfortunately it looks like I took the corset pieces from the same pattern and cut them out of something, which means they're probably buried in the WIP pile on the futon. I also tightened the bolts on the fourth stair up today, which tends to come loose and rock every now and again; Wonderful Husband knocked off a rather goodly chunk of the shopping list (braving CostCo on the weekend in the process); and together we got the house cleaned up to near pre-Fanime levels of tidiness. I still need to run the vacuum over the floors before I go to bed, but otherwise I'm satisfied with the weekend's doings. Tomorrow (now that the table is clear) I lay out the fabric for Armida's wedding dress and start in on that.

I've also been poking this weekend at Afterwards 14.5. A word to the wise: sometimes when you tell your characters "Just give me the final chapter already and I'll go back and write you smut!" they take you up on it. I have no problem with writing smut: it's fun, and sometimes it can be very revealing of the characters. In more ways than one. ^^;; I'm slowly discovering that what goes on inside Godai's head during sex is very slightly different from what goes on in most characters' heads during sex. His mental place is an interesting visit....

Somewhat relatedly, my only purchases at Fanime were in the Artists' Alley. I picked up prints from two different booths, some of which I purchased specifically because they cast me in the mind of The Novel. I don't have them pinned on the wall by my desk yet, but they seem to be working because I've already realized that something that I thought was a throw-away line is in fact Incredibly Significant and it's all pieces of a puzzle starting to come together....
sakon76: (Default)
Me being good means I got up at seven o'clock on a Saturday, ready to get some sewing in (hopefully at least one apron done!) before running off to the Fabric District with Armida. At about twenty past she sent a text message to Wonderful Husband's cellphone saying she was sorry but her grandmother was in the hospital so she had to cancel. Which I COMPLETELY understand. But since I'm up anyway, and too awake now to go back to bed, sewing it is! Now if only I could find my D-rings, I could even probably finish the first apron before Wonderful Husband wakes up....

Sewingish

sakon76: (iharthdarth)
Having not been able to get our sewing night in earlier this week, I rang up Liz earlier today and we decided to make tonight our sewing night. So I cut out two aprons that I've been wanting to sew (one to match the new curtains, the other out of some awesome holiday fabric I bought for the purpose years ago... what's not to like about red and green jalepeno peppers with "Feliz Navidad" written between them in gold?) and made decent progress on the first one. But now it has hit just past ten o'clock and I am crashing hard... do not know why. Will give in to instincts and go to bed, as tomorrow is a crawl through the Fabric District with Armida to get fabric for her wedding dress. And I am intending to be good and not get anything for myself....
sakon76: (Default)
Well, downstairs is massively cleaner due to the efforts of Wonderful Husband, I have baked banana bread and a lemon meringue pie for dinner at my parents' tonight, taken the measurements of and started discussing options with Wonderful Husband's coworker whom I'm making a wedding dress for, and gotten most of my scrap muslin folded as opposed to shoved into crumpled heaps. Amazing how it's taking up about half the space this way. So I guess today counts as kind of productive.

Have received word that Costume College is sold out for next year, which means, alas, I'm going it alone again with none of my IRL friends. Ah well. I guess I should see about finding roommates among other attendees.

The neckline of my new surcoat has been pleated and sewn; I've decided to use self-fabric to bind the neck and armholes, and am taking advantage of the stripes in a straight cut. This also has the advantage of meaning the neck and armholes will stretch very little since I'm not using a bias cut for the binding. Go me! Now I just need to finish the two armholes and I can actually work on, like, the sides and hem and stuff. ^^;; And a dress to go under this since I only have the dark blue one and the Princess Ovelia dress. Ovelia would actually go nicely, but the collar's all wrong for 13th century. I suppose a t-tunic is next on my list, since that's what's under this surcoat in the image I'm basing it on. [John Peacock's Costume 1066-1990s, which I know is suspect, being redrawings, but I like the outfit.]

Okay, off to parents' for kottbullar (Swedish meatballs)!
