Thundercats: The Drifter and the Duelist
Sep. 9th, 2011 11:10 pmThis was... not a bad episode. But it held too many cliches for me to really call it a good one either.
The opening scene, with Tygra and Panthro working on the Thundertank, totally charmed me. Such a throwback/shout-out to the original series.
tainry should be happy about it! Also about the reference to Tygra and Lion-O being brothers, which has seemed mostly forgotten. Though fortunately for my brain-breakiness, I didn't think of
tainry's slashfic until the episode was over.
Have to wonder, though, if they're installing the Book of Omens into the Thundertank, does that make Jaga their GPS? :)
The Drifter was... half Usagi Yojimbo, half Mr. Miyagi, and probably half various samurai movie heroes I haven't much acquaintance with. (Which just demonstrates once again my poor maths skills.) The whole trope of this episode was, in fact, a Japanese samurai movie. Yet, cliche as it was (we kept calling out what was going to happen next), it was still less annoying than the Moby Dick episode! Lion-O's personality transplant was briefer, and apparently with Marty McFly from the second and third films of the Back to the Future trilogy.
I liked the reference to Thunderian coinage being antiques now. :) I liked the sword contest, though Wonderful Husband immediately pegged it as being from The Dark Crystal. "Trial by Stone!" we both declared. ^_^ The vendor giving an info-dump about The Duelist, however, was just painful, clumsy writing. Particularly when The Drifter's backstory was given in a much better way.
I liked The Drifter kicking Lion-O out of the forge. What does a prince know of smithcraft, anyway? (Obviously little.) Swordwork, yes. Smithing, no. I didn't expect the sword to break in the middle of the battle, but the explanation later of why made sense.
And they all lived happily ever after and will hopefully get that OS/GPS installed soon. :)

Date: 2011-09-11 08:44 am (UTC)EEEEEEEEEEEEEEE yes!!! Although I wonder where this technical expertise in Tygra suddenly came from. I can think of at least a couple of explanations, but it is a bit wth. o.O Not that I'm not delighted. ::leers::
Fic. Yeah, sorry. ^^;
I'm getting a kick out of all the looks the two exchange since Panthro showed up, too, as fannish as that is. I won't call this an OTP because I have no objection to any other arrangements, but I'm enjoying this one v. v. much. ♥_♥
The Usagi Yojimbo reference has to be deliberate. XD But the execution of the character, the drifting thing, which exists without explanation, is lovely!
TRIAL BY STONE! XDDDDD
The variety of lifeforms on this show is fantastic. My xenophilic heart is happy. If we get Warrior Maidens I hope they're eusocial insects or something! <3
Jaga: Turn. Right. Now.
Panthro: %^$*&$!!!
Jaga: ... Recalculating...

Date: 2011-09-11 03:31 pm (UTC)Was it just me, BTW, or did you keep expecting the Duelist to, for his next trick, tie a maiden to a convenient set of railroad tracks? :) Wonderful Husband hopes he up and joins Mumm-Ra's forces and we see him again in that role, but both of us doubt it'll happen.

Date: 2011-09-11 11:21 pm (UTC)::nod:: That was one of my guesses. (I don't know if Panthro would have read it, or just skimmed for the basics... XD "I don't need any stupid instructions! I'm an engineer! How hard can it be?" -- my dad.) Either that or Tygra's been paying more attention to Lion-O's hobby all these years than he let on. Maybe read Lion-O's sekret lab journals. As much for the potential for being obnoxious at him later as curiosity. Can't let Lion-O be better than him at anything, after all.
LOL! Yes! XD I was waiting for mustache-twirling... "You must pay the rent!" "But I can't pay the rent!" "You must pay the rent!" "But I can't pay the rent!" "Then I'll pay the rent!" "My hero!" "Curses! Foiled again!"

Date: 2011-09-12 03:25 pm (UTC)The Duelist's appearance-- purple human? One Piece character who got lost on his way to the set?-- makes me wonder if he's not a representative of (one of?) the planet's native species, as opposed to the bestial races that crash-landed way back when.

Date: 2011-09-12 05:04 pm (UTC)Ooh, that's a good theory as to the Duelist! You're right, he really didn't appear to be any sort of animal. (My first thought for him would actually be the Purple Pieman from Strawberry Shortcake, but then I never got into One Piece.)
