Thundercats: The Drifter and the Duelist
Sep. 9th, 2011 11:10 pmThis was... not a bad episode. But it held too many cliches for me to really call it a good one either.
The opening scene, with Tygra and Panthro working on the Thundertank, totally charmed me. Such a throwback/shout-out to the original series.
tainry should be happy about it! Also about the reference to Tygra and Lion-O being brothers, which has seemed mostly forgotten. Though fortunately for my brain-breakiness, I didn't think of
tainry's slashfic until the episode was over.
Have to wonder, though, if they're installing the Book of Omens into the Thundertank, does that make Jaga their GPS? :)
The Drifter was... half Usagi Yojimbo, half Mr. Miyagi, and probably half various samurai movie heroes I haven't much acquaintance with. (Which just demonstrates once again my poor maths skills.) The whole trope of this episode was, in fact, a Japanese samurai movie. Yet, cliche as it was (we kept calling out what was going to happen next), it was still less annoying than the Moby Dick episode! Lion-O's personality transplant was briefer, and apparently with Marty McFly from the second and third films of the Back to the Future trilogy.
I liked the reference to Thunderian coinage being antiques now. :) I liked the sword contest, though Wonderful Husband immediately pegged it as being from The Dark Crystal. "Trial by Stone!" we both declared. ^_^ The vendor giving an info-dump about The Duelist, however, was just painful, clumsy writing. Particularly when The Drifter's backstory was given in a much better way.
I liked The Drifter kicking Lion-O out of the forge. What does a prince know of smithcraft, anyway? (Obviously little.) Swordwork, yes. Smithing, no. I didn't expect the sword to break in the middle of the battle, but the explanation later of why made sense.
And they all lived happily ever after and will hopefully get that OS/GPS installed soon. :)
