Last night we finally went to The Olde Ship, a British pub a few miles north of us. Other than the acoustical ceiling tiles, it was in fact a dead ringer for being in a pub in England. It's owned by an ex-pat, which explains the verisimilitude. And the food was good, with one tiny exception.

They use peanut oil for frying things.

Wonderful Husband has once again been stymied in his quest for real fish'n'chips. Still, there were other things on the menu he could eat, and we discovered there's apparently a British foods shop somewhere between us and the restaurant, so we may try finding that later today to see what they carry.

I have a curiosity. What kind of oil is typically used for frying fish and chips authentically?

No idea. But where the type of oil is important is where Wonderful Husband has a deadly allergy to nuts and nut oils. He does say that it's not peanut oil in your average chippie, though.

I wish we had a good fish'n'chips place around here. All we have is along the lines of Long John Silver's which is just ick.

We have a pretty decent pub up here- I'll find out what kind of oil they use. If nothing else, I can make fish and chips as a treat the next time you come up to visit.
