So this weekend was Wondercon! And in some ways it's a good thing I didn't end up needing to fly up to help my sister after all, because Wonderful Husband is sick. Cough, stopped-up nose, etc... no fever. But he ends up extremely run down each day, which is not a good state to be in while taking care of a very active little boy in the form of Squiddle.

But we did the con, taking two separate cars on Saturday (he left about an hour and a half before I did) and going together on Sunday. One nice thing about being local to the con (we live ~5 miles from the convention center) is knowing where to park. The signs were directing convention center parking to Anaheim Stadium, to be bused in! We parked at the GardenWalk instead and walked over.

I took four books and got them signed by Mercedes Lackey and Larry Dixon. We bought a couple new variants on Ticket To Ride (Rails and Sails, and a card game), Amy Mebberson's Disney Princesses books, a pair of Stupid Fox books for Squiddle (and a Furret sticker he really really wanted), some Pokeball hackysacks for juggling, and a HTTYD shirt for me. We didn't attend the Masquerade, but there was some wonderful hall cosplay going on. I only attended one panel (the Mercedes Lackey/Larry Dixon panel), but overall I left the con feeling inspired both for writing and for sewing. And also, yesterday Wonderful Husband was extremely patient and minded both boys while I donated blood. It's been years since I've done so, and I feel good about getting back into the habit.

Now to wait until this Saturday and see if we can get tickets to Comic-Con. We tried for the prereg sale, and Wonderful Husband got in the sale area at the last minute... only to be told that there were no tickets left for sale. Which was not well done of the ticket sales mechanism.

So, Saturday Wonderful Husband and I went to see Kingsman: The Secret Service. Which has Colin Firth as a gentleman spy. Can't go wrong with that! The movie was serious in some ways, cheesy in others, and bad in only a few. I recommend it.

Sunday, Wonderful Husband, Squiddle, and I all dressed up in our Steven Universe togs, and jotted down the street to the Anaheim Convention Center for Wondercon!

Wondercon 2015

We got a lot of comments loving our family cosplay, and especially the "tiny Steven!"

Overall, a good time was had. We managed to get into both the panels I found interesting on the schedule, and walked the whole dealer's room. Our wallets came away lighter, our hands heavier, with a couple volumes from Studio Foglio, and a board game called Trekking the National Parks.

I've been keeping myself busy with Piece and Quilt's star block sewalong, writing class has just started again (as have Squiddle's classes), and I've mailed off the gift quilt, so when the recipient gets it, then I can post about that.

For now, to bed. Early morning music class for the Squiddle!

Wonderful Husband has been watching his way through Steven Universe recently. The show is surpisingly good. And Wondercon is coming up next weekend. So last night I made a suggestion that I make the Squiddle a Steven costume. It's simple enough - sandals (check), denim shorts (check), red t-shirt with a yellow star on it. Only one item to make! Wonderful Husband thought that would be kind of fun, but pointed out that Squiddle doesn't have the hair for it (Steven's hair is dark and curly; Squiddle's is currently like mine, honey-colored and fine). I pointed out that Wonderful Husband does have the hair for it, and upped the ante by suggesting I could make them matching costumes.

So this morning Squiddle and I went to the thrift stores and found a couple plain red t-shirts in daddy and toddler sizes, as well as a yellow one to cut up to make the stars. And I will make Wonderful Husband go buy jeans or denim shorts for himself this weekend.

...If I am truly mean/ambitious, I will go to Michael's and buy a couple pink rhinestones, and then Halloween Club for some spirit gum and glue gems to both their bellybuttons.

Unfortunately there's really not a character for me in the show. I'd want to be Rose, but her costume is more intricate and would take wig styling, and I'm so not into that right now.

Yesterday I was quilting the last half of the last border. I needed to change needles, which, fine, whatever. Quilting takes a larger needle size than I typically use for sewing, so I went through my inherited packets of needles in search of one which was sharp. While I was doing that, the Squiddle got ahold of my scissors.

And managed to cut the quilt.

It's only about an inch and a quarter. It's on a section of the border I hadn't gotten to yet. I can haul out my Babylock and repair it with a zigzag stitch.

But still. That plus the needle thing threw me off my game for the rest of the day.

Nonetheless, I did finally get around to buying us tickets to Wondercon. Unfortunately Saturday tickets were sold out, so like with Comic-Con, it looks like we'll only be attending on Sunday. Que sera sera.

Today I went to the Fullerton Arboretum plant sale, with my list in hand, and bought only what was on my list. This is me trying to be virtuous and not overextend myself gardening this year. That said, I still walked out with twenty plants more and something like $66 less. And I've been weeding the bed along the front of the house to put ten-ish of those plants in. (Purple jalepenos, white habeneros, shishito peppers, and rosa bianca eggplants.)

I have also discovered that at some point in the last six months, Penzey's Spices opened a store less than three miles from my home. Dangerous!

Well, Saturday memberships for SDCC sold out again, so it looks like we'll only be doing Sunday of SDCC this year. Maybe we'll do both days of Wondercon, then....
