I do a daily troll through CNN.com, Time.com, and Wikipedia's top page for my news fix. In their "On this day" sidebar, wikipedia noted that today in "1971 – The Japanese tokusatsu television series Kamen Rider premiered, marking the beginning of the long-running Kamen Rider franchise."
