Another one! Probably sibling to the last (who got adopted by sister's friend's coworker afaik). Was just minding my own business, closing the kitchen windows before going to bed last night, when I looked out them. "Huh. There's a cat on the side lawn." *cat looks up, starts to bolt a couple of feet, pauses* "...With a kitten under her." *goes out, grabs kitten, gets Wonderful Husband to makeshift a box-and-blankets since cat carrier is still with sister*

Jesus, what is it with me and kittens? While pouring my breakfast cereal, I heard that distinctive high-pitched "mew! mew! mew!" that signals a kitten in distress, and so went out to the side yard to see if I could find it. Cue one fluffy black-and-white standing just outside the garden gate, didn't even try to run when I picked it up. Not from the same litter as before, since all the rest of those I didn't catch were dark-colored. So kitten is now in a carrier and will be dropped off at the shelter after work.

EDIT: Kitten is a he and he is adorable and I have dubbed him "Breakfast" since that's what I was in the middle of having when he turned up. I would be tempted to keep him save for the fact that I already have two cats and that's all I can handle. But still, feeling all maternal as the flea-ridden fluffball naps in the crook of my arm.

Have trapped Greystoke (aka the mama kitty). Have called over to the vet and they have room for her today, so I shall be leaving momentarily to take her to get spayed.

Stopped by my parents' after work to drop off cucumber plants and lightbulbs and KMR (Kitten Milk Replacement). Little Cupcake is already looking a lot better (eye medication working) and plumper, and is a lot more active than she was a couple days ago. That said, she still looks all wispy, like she forgot to use conditioner on her fur. She's definitely going to be medium to long-haired like her mama.

Got home to (1) discover Sushi playing with what looked like a cockroach as well as (2) the fact that the ants have finally twigged onto where the indoor kitties' food bowl is. Goddamn it all to hell on both of these counts! I may have to call Terminex and get us signed up for quarterly service. :(

After Wonderful Husband arrived home bearing ant spray and those got taken care of, I repotted about nine tomato plants and three jalepenos. Green stuff soothes me. I need to start haunting garden centers for stevia, as apparently the seeds' reputation for being difficult to sprout is well deserved. I'll have to propagate it the old-fashioned way, by taking cuttings.

Got the cat trap set up on the patio and baited, as well as spay/neuter vouchers at the ready. We'll see how long it takes for any of the ferals to take the bait....

This afternoon Wonderful Husband and I captured three of the kittens. Two got away and the sixth one... dunno. Maybe out with its mom? Currently the three we do have are in the bathroom, with the cat carrier padded with a folded towel, a dish of food, another of water, and a lasagna pan filled with kitty litter. They're all still huddled in the back of the carrier, but are handleable. My dad's going to take the one my sister dubbed Cupcake, and then I'll be dropping the other two off at the shelter. One of them seems to have an eye infection, so before I release them to the shelter I'll be asking pointedly to be sure that'll get treated and not be used as an excuse to put the kitten down. It's probably okay, but I want to be sure.

So, three down, possibly still three to go!

Botcon was... interesting. At once both more and less than I'd expected. I think I've been spoiled by fan-based cons, maybe? Among the highlights were getting to spend time with friends, both ones I'd met before and ones I hadn't, getting commended not only by Peter-the-voice-of-Optimus-Prime-Cullen for a question I asked during his panel but also by four separate people who'd been in line behind me, ending up with lots of writing inspiration, and getting to see a couple of clips of the upcoming film in a very, VERY plush theatre at Paramount. All I have to say is "oshit Devastator!" and "bad kitty Ravage!" I am going to be so, so very gleeful to see this film. Possibly enough so to do a midnight showing of it, which I've never done before. Anyone in the Orange County area interested?

I've planted three summer squash plants in the empty bed in front of the house... one's been doing okay all along and the other two are starting to look like they're rebounding. I also buried about a dozen sprouting potatoes between them and two have now broken the surface. Mulched all that today (Wonderful Husband: "...So that's what that smell was." Why am I the only person who likes the smell of cocoa mulch?) and dug up the two beds against the back to the house prepatory to digging some compost into them and planting vegetables in them as well. I excavated a completely buried, intact 6" clay pot from one of those beds. O.o;; Just a bit of WTH/WTF there.

Plus the third/most recent/final hiding spot/nest for the kittens has been discovered and hopefully tomorrow after work Wonderful Husband and I are going to capture them. Two of them are spoken for--one by my dad!--and the other four I'm going to give to the Orange County Animal Shelter, which has a very good fostering/adoption program. If anyone reading this wants a kitten, speak up by Saturday morning or lose your chance! I also received spay/neuter vouchers today, so it's time to start trapping my local ferals and stabilizing their colony's population.
