Monday it rained. This was good. I like the rain.

Today, however, we have the Santa Anas blowing cold from the desert. And I do mean cold. I'm not sure I have toes anymore. I didn't have fingers earlier until I petted the (staticky!) kittens for a while. They have fur coats. They're warm.

So I got very little of my planned activities done this evening, being involved in not freezing to death instead. I rediscovered that the cut edges of velveteen shed everywhere, so I have been combatting that. Stitched down the seam facings for the sleeves, found some red satin (not sure from what project... maybe [livejournal.com profile] iaurcalien's fairy underskirt?) and used a bit of it to make a lining for the dress bodice, got one sleeve sewn in and covered with the lining, have the other one pinned... tried it on Abby and discovered that yay, it fits! So next is sewing the other sleeve in, sewing the lining to it, doing seam finishes on the skirt seams, hemming the skirt, pleating it into the bodice, sewing the lining to cover the waist seam... um, cutting out and applying cuffs to the sleeves, stitching the lining in place around the collar and back opening of the bodice, adding closings, and sewing on some lace. You know, it all seemed like so much less before I listed it out like that.

But first comes a hot shower and then snuggling with the Wonderful Husband as the two of us wait out this icy night.

Well, my dolly Abigail, who my grandmother made for me when my sister was born almost 28 years ago now, has had her primary outfit washed as well as gone through the washer and dryer herself. The only damage that occurred was some side seam damage on her dress, where the seam popped and the fabric frayed through some. A minor matter of restitching the seam deeper has repaired the damage. While my friend Liz was over tonight for our weekly sewing session, I cut out a dress for Abby out of some red cotton velveteen, guessworking the size based on her primary dress. We'll see how it turns out.

I can't find my sewing machine's walking foot, but am hoping it's buried somewhere on the futon. I would really like to find it before the weekend as I've decided to (due to stiffness in the hands that says "no, you're not doing any more hand-sewing for a while") machine-quilt the Christmas quilts for my grandmother-in-laws. Wonderful Husband says he doesn't think they'll mind. And that way I can guarantee that they'll be done in time....

I also made the mistake today of looking around the site that [livejournal.com profile] hoshikage has purchased her newest doll from, and found one I actually like. So now there's a part of my brain going "hey, she's only $335...." Fortunately the rest of my brain is going "yeah, before shipping and extra wigs and eyes and even if I can make her clothes myself, I ain't payin' four hundred bucks for a doll!" Thus the making Abby a new dress, probably. I subvert one desire into another and it all ends up working fairly well.
