Got up this morning. Pre-heated the stove and did the maiden voyage of the silicone muffin tins my mother gave me for Christmas.

OHHHHH do I love my new baby. Bakes just fine (took a bit longer than recipe time indicated, but (1) the batter had just come out of the refrigerator, and (2) I think the oven temperatures are slightly off because baking always takes longer than indicated anyhow), and when you take it out, you just *pop* the muffins out of the tin. No sticking because of spilled-over batter, no paper muffin cups to fuss with peeling off... just nice and easy.

Also did fresh-squeezed orange juice and buttermilk pancakes, and got Wonderful Husband up for breakfast. He is currently vacuuming the floor downstairs, and then we go about tasks for the day.

Today, I baked.

'Twas theoretically my "shopping day" off from work, except that as most of the Christmas shopping is done and my car needed work, I cheerfully handed the latter off to my-uncle-the-mechanic and returned home. The total: a double batch of banana bread, chocolate chip cookies, oatmeal raisin cookies, snickerdoodles, and vanilla sugar cookies. I deliberately opted not to bake anything which would require either (1) needing to get stuff from the store, or (2) refrigeration time.

...baking may not start tonight because the butter does not seem to be softening. This might possibly be because the house is icy even with the heat on.

Went to the library after work to return most of my books, renew one, and check a few more out. One of the new ones was an anthology edited by Bruce Coville with short stories by lots of authors, especially Tamora Pierce. I read her story first (Numair-related!) then worked my way to the back of the book. Then started again at the front. And discovered that someone had torn ~30 pages out of the book. Intend to return the book tomorrow and let the library know. There is a special level of hell, I am convinced, that is reserved for those who destroy library books. And if there isn't, they at the LEAST need their cards revoked and entrance rights banned.

...it was in the middle of a very good story, too....

Contrary to popular rumor, I am still alive.

Am machete'ing my way through Christmas-gifts-to-buy, training my e-mail to do tricks like filter out spam, and thinking covetously of acquiring new baking skills and equipment (Parchment paper. A mini-whisk. Another set of baking pans. Crystallized ginger.) in preparation for Thursday, which, if I get enough shopping and wrapping done in time, is going to be The Day Of Baking. And Blood Tests. And Getting My 120K Car CheckUp Done. But mostly Baking. Because that's the important thing, you see... creating all these lovely little calories and then making other people eat them. Willingly. This soothes the hatred (on a low simmer, not a roiling boil) I have developed this year of all things December and Christmas related. Because there have been health problems and other very not fun things that I don't want to discuss. And I miss my cat. But this month is damn well going to end better than it started. I have Decreed It So. And then maybe I'll feel like writing again....

Two pies in the oven and a workroom that, while still a disaster area is at least a disaster area in a different shape than it started out from this morning. Oh, and two splinters dug out of the heel of my hand.
