Name Five Things That Make You Awesome
Nov. 26th, 2013 11:32 pmOne of the blogs I read, My Total Perspective Vortex, just posted about her inner battle with a Name Five Things That Make You Awesome meme. Her words, in turn, have made me try to think of things that make me awesome. Which is harder than I thought it would be, for the simple reason of, I'm just me. Looking at it from the inside, I'm no one special.
And realizing I look at myself that way pissed me off.
So, five things.
One, I am a writer. I haven't written much since the birth of my son, but I can feel the creativity welling up again now that I'm more used to things, and I know that some weekend day soon, probably after we're past the holidays, I'm going to hand our son to my husband and tell him, I'm writing today. I have written a novel, and that's pretty freaking awesome.
Two, I am a mommy. I spent nine months gestating new life, made up of little DNA bits from myself and the man I love. And I've spent the past eleven weeks nurturing that new life, watching Squiddle grow and learn. I am exclusively breastfeeding my child, and pumping extra milk to donate to preemies. And that's pretty awesome.
Three, I am a seamstress. I can take some fabric and thread and make a quilt, or a shirt, or a dress. And I'm learning how to service old machines, keeping sewing machines that may be older than my grandparents humming along nicely. I doubt my car can be made to last that long! So that's pretty cool and awesome.
Four, I am a gardener. It fell by the wayside this year, due to pregnancy concerns and complications, but I can grow strawberries, sweet corn, and an heirloom tomato that makes you weep with its flavor. Right now the air around my house is scented with paperwhites. During other times of the year, it may be citrus blossoms or roses. I'm not the best gardener out there... but what I can do, I've got down solid. Awesomeness.
Five, I was one of the translators on a team that subtitled into English the entire run of a certain Japanese television series. And that was seriously awesome. ^_^
So, friendslist. I challenge you. Give me five reasons why YOU are awesome!

Date: 2013-11-27 10:12 pm (UTC)2) I write things. I write long fiction (some novel length), I write short fiction, I write poetry. I create art that makes people feel, and that's pretty badass.
3) I cook! and bake! I like to make food, when my body can hold up to task.
4) I get out of bed every day and keep going, despite the spinal disorder that conspires with my nervous system against me.
5) I sew. clothes, bags, curtains, quilts, all sorts of things. I can even make formal dresses (but they are a pain!) and jackets/coats. I'm even planning to set up a small shop where I can make and sell handbags and quilts, as well as offer consignment sales for some of my former coworkers.

Date: 2013-11-29 04:35 pm (UTC)2. I am dedicated. The most important thing to me is that the people I care about are happy. If I love you, I will stick by you no matter what - unless you actively push me away - and I will do everything in my power to make you happy. I may not always get it right, but I'm always willing to try again.
3. I am efficient. I can turn a couple of bolt-ends into a Regency ballgown, and use every scrap of fabric from a zoot suit to turn it into a tailcoat - and still have the pinstripes (mostly) match up. When I take on a project, I look for ways to do it as inexpensively as possible while still getting the result I want.
4. I am eclectic. I love high culture, but I don't require all entertainment to be high culture in order to be enjoyable or worthwhile. I can drink in a Shakespeare play, and whoop it up at a popcorn movie; and I can see the juvenile humor in Shakespeare as well as the surprising depths in a kid's cartoon or a movie based on a comic book. I can also enjoy a wide range of styles and flavors of music, art, writing, etc., and am willing to try just about anything.
5. I am a work in progress. I am 42 years old, and I'm happier with who and what I am now than I have ever been in my life. I continue to work on being a better person, and will do so all my life.
