Since it was fuck-all hot today, hitting 96F inside the house (35.5C for non-Americans), not much got done. Watering plants, yes, but that's about it. Until I decided that, since I wasn't doing much else, I should finally get around to that project of organizing my records box. Am, hmmm, maybe half done? I've hit the part where I have bank statements dating back to 1994, and need to stop and check how many years back I'm supposed to hold onto bank and credit card statements.

I think a general rule of thumb is seven years.

Taxes you should hold onto for 7 years. These days with everything online and instantly available (if you are willing to trust it), there isn't much reason to hold onto bank or credit card statements much longer than the month they're in. I still hang onto them for a year, or until I get around to shredding them, whichever comes second.
