Author: Louis Slobodkin
Length: 94 pages
The main reason I wanted this book is that it's a prequel of sorts to my much-beloved The Spaceship in the Apple Tree series, though it's only ever alluded to in a single line therein, about the main character Eddie being an one-eighth owner in a messenger pigeon named Bixxy. And, eventually, after a few eBay trawls, I procured the book.
It's fun, it's cute, it has Slobodkin's wonderful drawings. And it's a fantastic insight into a time when the world was much safer and much slower. That said, it doesn't really win a permanent place in my heart the way the Spaceship books did.
Verdict: Recommended if you're a Spaceship fan and curious about a year-younger Eddie. Or if you like pigeons. ^_^
