Author: James Kahn
Length: 216 pages
Another estate sale $.25-er. With books of movies, I usually enjoy comparing and contrasting the script draft that the book is based on with the end result on the screen. There are usually some pretty interesting differences. However, it's probably been twenty years or more since I last saw Temple of Doom, so my memory's fuzzy. There are moments I can recall crystal clear, like the mine cart chase and the bugs and the spikes and the temple itself (probably aided by the many times I've gone on the Indiana Jones Adventure ride at Disneyland), and, hey, "Chilled monkey brains," but not the whole film. Not well enough to spot the differences.
That said, the novelization is an amusing, light read, even if a bit disturbing in places. But then so was the film, so I guess it fits. I think it says something about my writing classes that I stopped in a few places and examined the sentence structures, wondering whether the way things were phrased was an artifact of... dear gods, twenty-eight years of stylistic change. That said, the writing style was interesting and I rather want to try out a few of the sentence structures for myself.
Verdict: Worth reading for the nostalgia alone. Now I want to rewatch the film.

Date: 2012-05-31 02:03 am (UTC)We'll see if I get to go on the ride next week... The group I'm with includes kids aged 3-6. I'm sure it would freak them out completely.
