I fully admit I am a snob about many things of various stupidity. My kitchen garden, for one. I only grown plants from heirloom seeds. And sometimes costuming is another.

I've been avoiding most of the trailers and spoilers for the movie Brave. (Mainly because I know I will want to cosplay either Queen Elinor, and good luck for me on finding material to match her dress, or Merida.) But when these collages were posted on the [livejournal.com profile] d_princesses comm, I figured they couldn't be too spoilery, so I took a look.

Look at the third and fourth collages. Tell me if that doesn't look like Merida being laced into a Victorian corset. When the rest of her clothing is clearly medievaloid. Corsets weren't even invented when the movie is supposed to be set!

Argh. No words. Pixar fail.

Heh, as if writing a bad Mulan/HTTYD crossover and selling it as a movie wasn't a big enough fail already? ;D And as much as I love the effect of the hair, it's nagging at me that gravity is affecting it as if it were a handful of yarn, not actual hair (or even a bigass clump of yarn!).

They'd have to pay me a LOT to sit through that movie.

I'm enjoying the previews by pretending it takes place in the same world as Brigadoon (ie, celtic fantasy) :D This is working surprisinglyw ell, although it will probably be spoiled by lack of people bursting into song when I actually see the movie.

Yup! That's definitely a Victorian-style corset. If she were wearing any corsetry at all for that time period it'd be just a stiff and tightly (front) laced undergown. (Also, ooh, pretty green gown!)

You're probably best just saying it's set in the early part of the Disney/Pixar Fairy Tale Era and leaving it at that. Very little Disney costuming does more than glance at an actual historical style. :P

Cartoon character creators generally fail at things like period outfits.

There is one cartoon-costume detail that I love and was rather appropriate, and that was in Tangled. Mother Gothel wears a medieval-inspired gown, while the other characters are more renn-inspired. She's also centuries older than the other characters, and thus likely is hanging onto the fashions of her youth, like many women do today in an effort to look "young".
