Author: Seanan McGuire
Length: 348 pages
One of my more highly anticipated reads of the year. It says something (possibly about how slow my workplace is today) that I received this last night and finished it today during my lunch break. It feels so good to do a furious read through a book, unable to put it down until the last page!
There are a few flaws. From my standpoint, anyway; YMMV. I've never particularly cared for the first person point of view. And the epilogue felt very sum-uppy (is that even a word?) to me. Yet despite these flaws, I will be rereading it. Possibly after shoving it in Wonderful Husband's direction and telling him "Read!" (Who knows, since it's the first of the InCryptid books, he might even do so.) Reasons why? Let's start with the fact that it's a fun universe! I've been reading dribbles and drabbles of this universe on the author's journal for a couple years, and was ecstatic when she announced a book. Ballroom dancers, dragon princesses, tanuki... what's not to like? Plus I was genuinely not expecting at least two of the plot twists.
And the talking pantheistic Aeslin mice are, frankly, worth the price of admission all by themselves.
Verdict: Highly recommended. Cheese! And! Cake!
