Title: Snow Flower and the Secret Fan
Author: Lisa See
Length: 253 pages
Not a work in my usual literary purview, that's for sure. This is a book about the lives of women in the Jiangyong region of China in the 19th century. Which would normally turn me off--footbinding! *shudder*--but it turned out to be written sensitively, examining the lives of its characters from within their own cultural perspective, not mine.
In the end, I'm not entirely sure what I took away from this book. Meditations on grace? Kindness? Friendship? But regardless, it's getting stuck on my bookshelf for a later reread.
Verdict: Recommended.
