Got a call from a hospital, asking if we cremate (amputated) body parts. In this case a foot. The rest of the person is still alive.

I had no idea, so I passed the nurse(?) onward and upward to the assistant manager. But first I asked (she said she'd been working at the hospital for six years) what they do with the parts otherwise. She said actually, she didn't know. ^_^;;

Which leads me to the question: if a part of you got amputated, what would you want done with it? For myself, I think cremated and then scattered at sea because I wouldn't exactly want to keep it on the mantel or anything....

I would cook and eat it.

It's not cannibalism, it's preservation of nutrients in your own body. Like a lizard eating its tail. And then you would always know what human tastes like. I mean, a whole leg? Endless possibilities there! You could grill some of it, roast some of it, bake some of it... I mean, I would hate to lose a limb, but on my deathbed, I would want to think, "That's what I did with it."

I'd been given to understand in human medicine they cremated the bits, unless there was something interesting to be learned from dissection.

On our end, we send legs and things off to the same place that cremates the whole bodies - don't even have to tag 'em.

When I was a kid there was some question about whether they'd have to remove my left eye or not, if it was going to give me problems. (It never really did, aside from calcium deposits on the cornea, so it's still there, just hangin' out in the socket.) I said I wanted it in a jar to keep, and then I could put it up somewhere in my room and keep an eye on myself... ::ducks::

I'd also been given to understand they cremated the bits, but given that the hospital person didn't know, I'm beginning to wonder. And at that, it was one of the more reputable hospitals in the area!

And, wow, you had a twisted sense of humor that early on? Awesome!

My husband has said repeatedly that if he ever has bits of himself removed, he will ask to keep them. They will then be added to our Victorian steampunk/mad scientist collection.
