Books books books books books!

sakon76Well. Finished Trickster's Choice. Definitely interesting. I admit I had a hard time getting into it for the first little bit--ooh, look, Alanna's rebellious only daughter has dyed her hair blue and bam! she gets kidnapped and sold as a slave, how Mary Sue--but Aly has grown on me as a person. Added to which there are lots of lovely background bits about what's happened to other characters we've met in the universe so far, such as who a certain crown princess ends up marrying, and Daine and Numair's firstborn (the gender of which somehow did not surprise me) and even Coram and Rispah had a cameo, yay! Plus a swordfight between Alanna and Kelandry. Now *that* was fun!
Tamora Pierce does seem to be going through the multi-cultural thing in recent works, though. Tortall has always been vaugely England or France, and Spain, and then there's Carthak/Egypt, the Yamani Isles/Japan... and now the Copper Isles seem to be Thailand maybe? In her Circle series she's hinted at Holland, Greece (with a touch of Japanese culture again unless ancient Greece had a similar thing about eta, non-people), China, and someplace middle Eastern (can't figure out on just where the setting of Street Magic is supposed to be based). I actually enjoy this trend of hers. It's neat to see how she reworks her real-world research into a fictional setting.
Also, while I was at Barnes and Noble today I saw that Lois McMaster Bujold's newest work, The Paladin of Souls, is out and that she will be at that particular store next Saturday at 2pm. I work at 1pm on Saturdays. Grr. So I'll ask for middle or closing shift instead and lose a few hours. Maybe drag my sister along so I can get autographs on both that and The Curse of Chalion. Perhaps even get to ask her if the culture of the haut women in Cetaganda is based on the Heian-era Japanese court, as I suspect it may be.
And now that I have finished my new book (403 pages of story!) I am going to bed.
