Costume College 2011
Aug. 1st, 2011 11:21 amIt was long, it was fun, as always I didn't participate in any of the activities besides the classes themselves. I'd really love to have a friend to stay at the hotel and participate in the activities with, but those of my acquaintances who attend live nearby or already have annual roommates so sharing a hotel room with them is out.
I attended various classes on Saturday, none of which really stuck firmly enough to my fuzzy brain that I can recall them at the moment. I browsed the marketplace, and donated three packed and overflowing grocery bags of fabric to the Bargain Basement for Sunday morning's Bazaar. I developed a cough which yet persists.
Sunday, I made the deliberate decision NOT to get to College by 8am, when the Bazaar opened. There was a lot of stuff I wanted, and I didn't want to break my budget. Instead I got there ~45 minutes after start and fortunately a good chunk of it was gone. I ended up spending what I felt was a reasonable amount on some fabric, patterns, old Threads magazines that fit the gaps in my collection, and various doodads. There were two vintage sewing machines still there at that point; I told myself that if they were still there when I went back at 11:45 (it closed at 12) they were meant to be mine.
I went off and taught my steel boning class for the second time, and think it's run its course. There's such a high rate of repeat members at College that generally any given class has finite repeatability. So I need to think up new classes to offer next year. The special emphasis track will be on Hollywood: 1930-1955, which I really don't know much about, so that's not giving me any ideas. Ah well, I have months to think something up. I also took classes on Elizabethan hair styling (and as of this morning I've started saving up my hair brushings to make my own rats) and of course my limited attendance class on vintage sewing machines. Which started out iffy but ended up being really fantastic by the end. (
ghilledhu, the instructor gave me two copies of the class CD so I'll send one to you.) Unfortunately when I went back to the Bazaar, someone else had grabbed those two machines, but I have my grandmother-in-law's to play with, yes? My only purchases in the Marketplace were a couple patterns from Decades of Style. In general I feel jazzed about sewing again, but I will finish that t-tunic outfit before working on anything else. Except maybe for tackling some of the mending pile.
No more convention commitments for the rest of the year. Hooray!
