My Wednesday night writing class ended last week. Wonderful Husband takes a Wednesday night ice skating class, and as this was the last class of this session, it was "bring a friend" night.

I apparently can still only do fifteen minutes on my ice skates before being reduced to the pain point of tears and having to take them off. The accompanying tension headache is not helped by the sheer noise of the rink, nor by the cold. The instructor for us guests didn't help by remarking that it took her nearly two years to break in her skates. Wonderful Husband's never caused him any discomfort.

I used to be able to skate. Why the hell are personal skates that cost nearly $200 so much more painful than even the crappy rentals?

What is wrong with my feet? What is wrong with me?

nothing wrong with you at all. Skating used to not be painful for me, when I was a kid. Now it is intensely so. I'm sure the fact that there is 100 more pounds on my ankles doesn't help matters.

As said above, rentals are already broken in. Plus, they are certainly lower quality - meaning less material, less support - than any personal skates you would buy. The down side of this is that it means there is more work to break them in. I remember it always took me a while to break in new boots when I was a kid. I also have this vague memory of something about soaking the boots (getting the leather wet?) and wearing the boots for a few hours around the house (with blade guards on of course). I think the idea was that the wet leather would mold around your feet? I don't remember the details though, and I don't think we did this for all my skates, just one time.
