On the Fine Art of Hypocrisy

I hate remakes of good '80s movies. I decry the new version of The Karate Kid and rail against the soon to be released remake of Arthur. Because, really, do the filmmakers honestly hope to approach the warmth and charm of the originals? Let alone exceed them? Let them go pick some crappy '80s film to remake instead.
But then I watch the trailer for the upcoming Thundercats reimagination and end up looking forward to it. (And I snickered as soon as I heard Kind Claudus' voice. Didn't even need to look at Wikipedia to peg the casting. And Kevin Michael Richardson as Panthro is inspired. Though overall I'm seeing shades of Escaflowne.) My love for Transformers doesn't count; it's always had multiple versions going. But I also liked the redo of He-Man some years ago. And then there's the newest Star Trek film, which is in kind of another category altogether.
I think it ends up being the difference between "cash cow" (Hollywood remakes) and "love and respect for the original, while still seeking to improve on it/add a new twist."
Which, come to think of it, is why I like fanfiction....
