Editor: Mercedes Lackey
Length: 309 pages
So, the next book on my reading list was actually the newest Naomi Novik book. Except I went to a rummage sale today, and it looks like someone decided to get rid of all their Mercedes Lackey books/fantasy short story collections (the two categories overlapped by rather a lot), and I snapped up several for a quarter each.
Chouja Raideen aside, I'm not that much into birds of prey, but I read all the stories. Some were mildly amusing: Tweaked in the Head reminded me of
seanan_mcguire's writing; I liked One Wing Down because I'm always a sucker for a good Arthurian story; and Lackey's own story Wide Wings took a secondary character from her novel The Black Swan and gave her her own story. Overall, though... I found the book kinda forgettable. If I end up keeping it rather than consigning it to the Goodwill pile, it'll be on the strength of One Wing Down. The subject theme just didn't really click for me.
Verdict: For the birds. Or those who like them, anyway. :)
