As the subject line indicates, after two weekends of looking at cars, test-driving cars, looking at specs on the internet, comparing, comparing, comparing... we went into a dealership today, and we just can't make it work. Not without either totally draining our savings and/or making payments into forever. So we're getting my 1996 Civic repaired and I'll continue to drive that until needs must.

But thank god we're not going to be as close to the edge as I was stressing about.

I'm sorry on one hand, and on another, I applaud your ability to manage your finances so well.

More of a refusal to get ourselves in trouble than anything, really. We're doing okay now and have a reasonable safety cushion, but if we got the car, if either of us lost our job or our ability to work, we might lose everything. Mortgage + car payments would eat away very rapidly at our savings. Being debt- and risk-adverse people has worked for us thus far; a shiny new car isn't a good enough reason to change that habit. :)

Plus this way we can afford a working master bathroom sometime in the next year! ^_^

Whew! *breathes a prayer of thanks to Lakshmi for you*

Here's hoping the Civic holds out until you're in a better place to get a new car.

Have you thought about going to a police auction? I know that where I live there are good cars there and you can get them for a good price usually.
