RL weekend

sakon76No estate sale-ing this weekend, since the only one in my local listings definitely sounded too rich for my blood, so Wonderful Husband and I mostly pottered about the house. Yesterday it rained most of the day (1.3" here sayeth my rain gauge, but where my sister lives ~15 miles closer to the coast, her street was flooded) so the day was spent doing laundry and the like. Today was dry, though, and also the date for my mother's belated birthday gathering, so a good part of the day was spent cooking and tidying. dinner was chicken cacciatore with brown rice for those of us who eat meat, chard-mushroom-shallot quiche for those who don't, with sourdough bread and sunflower seed bread as sides, and apple pie with whipped cream for dessert. The family pooled funds and got my mother 15 years of Fine Cooking on DVD-ROM, which apparently she didn't expect to get even though it was the only thing she asked for! I also gave her a few pieces of kitchenware I'd picked up at estate sales with her in mind, and a loofah ready to be peeled and used.
Wonderful Husband took advantage of the good weather to mow both the front and back lawns. He also picked up some black landscape cloth, intended to go down on the vegetable garden paths to eliminate the need for future weeding of paths. We're still undecided as to what will top the cloth... bark chips would likely be the cheapest and easiest option, but I keep thinking longingly of pavers, with low-growing herbs selectively placed in between. The garden continues to produce albeit slowly. I was actually quite happy this morning to find enough ripe tomatoes for the cacciatore because I was dreading going to the store for just one can of tomatoes. At the moment, I have beets and turnips, Swiss chard and snow peas, eggplants and leeks all ready for cooking use. I must look up more recipes for using these.
