Title: The Tightwad Gazette II
Author: Amy Dacyczyn
Length: 274 pages

I'd seen this book (actually all three volumes, but this was the only one my library had on the shelf) recommended on a few of the personal finance blogs I read, but kind of dreaded picking it up, thinking "Oh, it'll all be about turning your pantyhose inside out to wear them again and nailing can lids to your kids' shoe soles to make tap-dance shoes." I'm actually quite pleasantly surprised--while it does have a lot of those kind of tips, it also has a lot of articles on the philosophy and practice of frugality, things like "why (and when) to buy and renovate an older house," "dumpster diving - what is it, and is it for you?" and "creative deprivation - having less stuff and appreciating what you do have more." In short, it's partly the tips guide I was expecting, but partly a guide to learning how to think and how to change your thinking. (Which is what school was all about, at least according to society, right?) I found the author's tone pleasant and fun to read, not at all sounding like someone Spreading The Gospel Of Frugality. I'm actually considering adding the "Complete" version (books 1-3 consolidated) to my wishlist.

Verdict: Highly Recommended.
