Title: Cat Running
Authors: Zilpha Keatley Snyder
Length: 183 pages
I picked this up at the library at the same time as The Gypsy Game, on the basis that it was a ZKS book I hadn't read before.
The titular character, Cat, lives in California in the 1930s, at the height of the Depression. The story is about her daily life and is quite believably written; you can tell the author put research into it. As with all ZKS books, there is a secret place/game that Cat invents, and that others come into. One thing I like about this particular book, though, is that at the end everything isn't all wrapped up and solved in one tidy package. Cat still has problems, but she's taken a step into an emotionally larger and more mature world. I also like that there were a few phrases that made me stop and go "ooh" and read them out loud. Nice writing.
Verdict: Recommended. It's better by far than this review.
