The Big Read reckons that the average adult has only read 6 of the top 100 books they've printed. Well, let's see.
1) Look at the list and bold those you have read.
2) Italicize those you intend to read.
3) Underline the books you LOVE.
4) Strike out the books you have no intention of ever reading, or were forced to read at school and hated.
5) Reprint this list in your own LJ so we can try and track down these people who've read 6 and force books upon them.

Huh, only a third of the list. I need to read more. And, as an aside, I haven't italicized any because there are actually few books that I "intend" to read... I just read them. There are no underlined titles because I find it hard not to like books. Like people, they're all imperfect, and have something worth loving in them.

I've read 20 of them, but I would never classify some of those as "best" books, or even great ones. Some were just downright poorly written, uninteresting drivvel that must've ended up on Oprah's Book Club by mistake or something and are currently popular *shrug* And it seemed a few books that would belong in a top-100 list are missing, too. Perhaps they should take out one of the SHakespeare repeats? (I'm just glad I didn't see any Stephen King or Laurel K. Hamilton in that list. XD)

I very generously got about 30 of them (I included books I didn't bother to finish). I also noticed that some of the choices are questionable as well; for instance, I can see no reason for "The DaVinci Code" to be on that list other than it's presence on some recent best-seller lists. Likewise, there's a number of classic recent novels that should be on there as well: "The Name of the Rose or Foucault's Pendulum" at the least.

But one problem is a lot of these books run into my ADHD; they just aren't interesting enough for me to keep reading until I get involved in the story.

I read too much...I've read 53 of them and am in the middle of His Dark Materials (so I didn't count it b/c I have't finished it.) And only one I will not read.
Some of these I've never heard of, and others that I would consider much better reads are not on the list. One book that I re-read about once per year is The Hunt for Red October. It's just...really, really good and a great action/adventure book that takes you into another world, and far better than the Dan Brown books.
