sakon76: (Ahiru's Eyes)
[personal profile] sakon76
For a few different reasons, I've recently taking up going to estate sales as a hobby. This morning I lucked onto a chocolate set, which is (generally described) a tall, slender teapot and (in this case) four accompanying small cups and saucers. It's in nigh-mint condition, with just a little wearing of the gold on the top of the handle. Looking around the 'Net for information on my purchase, I concentrated on the backstamp on the pieces, which is green with the words "Hand Painted" and "Nippon" with what looks like a capital I and C stacked on top of one another (like a deranged cent sign) in the middle. The best I've been able to find is:

"Nippon : Nippon is porcelain made in Japan between 1891 and 1921. Best stated, Nippon is actually an era and was made by many different companies. Typically, a Nippon piece of porcelain will have the word "Nippon" included in its mark or backstamp. In 1921 the USA asked Japan to no longer use the word Nippon on its exports to America, but instead to substitute the word "Japan" or the phrase "Made in Japan". Hence, most likely, any porcelain from Japan with the word "Japan" on it is not Nippon. Most Nippon was made for the Western market and very little of it remained in Japan. Today there are over 350 recognized authentic Nippon marks or backstamps."

So, on the off chance that any of my friends might recognize that "IC" or "CI" marking and point me in the right direction, anyone have any clues?
