Primary quilting on quilt #1 done. And by "primary" I mean the straight lines across the single Irish chain formed by the double nine patches. (I pause here to reflect that few, if any, of the people who read this lj will actually understand the previous sentence.) The so-called "fun part" comes next. This would be "so-called" because the secondary designs are going to be curved. Which is going to involve either contortions of the fabric around, under, and through the machine (and keep in mind it still has pins in it at this point, most of which seem to be aimed for my fingers, underarms, or any other available flesh), OR it is going to involve me purchasing a quilting foot and learning how to keep the speed and fabric tension even as I shift the fabric around in less contorted ways. The pins, however, will still be present and aimed for my flesh.
I think I shall spend the rest of the evening meditating on these options as I fold laundry, draw the desired curvilinear designs on with chalk, and eventually sleep. I shall also consider the wisdom of getting some quilting safety pins (they do exist; they're like regular safety pins but slightly curved to go through a quilt's thickness) so that the regular quilting pins I have now will have limited future opportunity to savage my flesh.
