*thud*

Am extant. Have "done" a WorldCon. There are some areas in which I think it was better than an anime con, but many more points where the converse is true. Will discourse later.

Our group won Best Workmanship, Journeyman class, as well as a special Most Photogenic award. I'd feel more elated about how special this was had there been proper workmanship judging. As it was, our group of five was gone over in less than three minutes, and at least one of the judges was extremely ticked off at this brevity as well.

Attended Baen's preview panel where it was confirmed that Bujold has signed a contract for another Vorkosigan book (to be published ~2009).

And that is all for now as I am now ISO unconsciousness.

If it helps any, the craftsmanship judge (not Karisu) is the one who does SDCC every year and she's extremely fast but she knows her stuff. We've been judged by her in previous years where we thought she barely looked at us and when the awards were handed out, we felt they were all pretty fair including the one we got.

So don't take it too personally yeah? They started late too so they were probably rushing at the end.

Congrats again! =)

I'm not taking it personally, I've just always heard about how prestigous (considering it's an obscure hobby) Workmanship awards are at WorldCons and... well, we didn't get asked any construction questions, we didn't even get to tell them how we made anything. It felt like there should have been more to the process. As it is, it feels empty.

What did they ask you then? o_O

The judges this year (for better or worse) are different from the ones they usually use because Martin was running the show.

I think you guys deserved the award you got and maybe it was obvious at a glance to them? (Just guessing here.) I don't think you should let that take away from what you guys accomplished and were awarded. You guys looked awesome and lots of people thought so too. =)

They didn't really ask much, that's the thing. I think maybe a question on wing construction? [livejournal.com profile] hoshikage made sure to point out the embroidery, but I don't think she even got into the challenges of fitting some of our more oddly-shaped members. And honestly, I'm not arguing the award; I do feel that we did a solid job on our construction. I'm certainly not arguing the judges' competence. I guess it's more a case of the time crunch removing what I'm used to as far as workmanship judging goes. I'm used to the slower-paced "tell me about your costume/how did you make it/how did you achieve this effect" questioning from the judges. This felt like a breeze passed through, ruffled the edges of our costumes, and was gone almost before we had a chance to realize it was there. Just... bizarre in its absence. I'm feeling better about it all now that I've had more sleep, though. ^_^
