Put bumroll, hoopskirt, and cartridge-pleated skirt #1 on today, and discovered the skirt was too short to cover the hoopskirt.
...All that work Wonderful Husband and I did yesterday, down the drain....
At least they ripped out easier than they sewed in. I've made a top panel and will be flat-pleating the skirt fabric to that, then trying again on the hemming.

Date: 2005-06-12 10:13 pm (UTC)Make undergarments first. Fit muslins (if you're using one) and then final outergarments over undergarments. Hem skirts while wearing them over any hoops, bumrolls, etc.
...sorry if I seem to have the ranty-pants on. This is one of the big historical 'stumery rules, right after "When getting dressed, it's corset first, then shoes".

Date: 2005-06-13 03:54 am (UTC)I made the hoopskirt first, discovered it dipped too low in the back, made a bumroll that corrected the matter. Then I cartridge-pleated the skirt and tried it on over those, doing the fitting as I went. I was using the 45" width of the fabric as the vertical because it's dupioni and I want the subtle illusion of the vertical threads to add to height because almost no one has the long long anime legs. Unfortunately it needed to be about 47" long so I undid the cartridge pleating and added a... hmm, placket? Top section, anway. And now it's long enough and works fine. Fortunately the next two skirt layers are progressively shorter so the 45" dupioni for them should work just fine.

Date: 2005-06-13 01:38 pm (UTC)It had sounded earlier like you'd made the skirt, then made the hoop, THEN tried to hem the skirt over the hoop and discovered the shortness.
Personally, I'm short, so using the width of the fabric is usually okay for me. Though I did once make a hoopskirt too short -- it showed my ankles! *gasp* and corrected it by adding a broad band of ribbon at the hem. Making a...yoke I think is the word...sounds like a good solution, especially if it's going to be covered by subsequent skirtage.
