Cartridge pleats, unfortunately, cannot be done by machine. They are, however, a lovely way of getting a lot of fabric into a small space. And they're annoying. But at least the gathering thread has stopped snapping. Three-quarters left to go....

I know. That's what I was using, which is why I was shocked when it started snapping.
