Right, this weekend.

We went to the RenFaire on Saturday. I like the new location (cooler, shadier, is on a lakeshore) but don't care as much for the layout. It's essentially one long aisle. We all managed to get away without sunburn on only one application of SPF 30. Well, almost true... I managed to miss one small patch on my sternum but that's faded by now. The bodice I made for [livejournal.com profile] racerxmachina is a success, giving her body the proper Elizabethan line without paining her or causing her to be unable to breathe or eat. She declares that it's the most comfortable bodice she's ever worn. Her personalized pattern is bagged and labelled, ready for reuse. Also, her husband's new 'Faire clothing, and my Wonderful Husband in his new shirt showing off his juggling skills. I also saw two Links, one Frodo, one Arwen, and a Faramir at 'Faire. Not too bad.

Today the four of us saw Hitchhiker's Guide. I rather liked it--it was well-written in movie terms while still retaining the flavor and story of the novel. Wonderful Husband, a fervent fan of the TV series, liked it for other reasons, but not as well, I think, as the TV series.

[livejournal.com profile] hoshikage let me know that the two Chobits costumes I want to do (other than Sumomo, who I've already done) have been done. I looked at the image she pointed me at, and I can do them both better. I've actually spent a decent part of this weekend wondering how and when I've turned into a historical costuming person (the Chobits costumes in question are very 1700s and 1800s based). It's probably been a slow, ongoing process but it just hit me all of a sudden that I wasn't looking at peoples' garb as garb, but critiquing to myself "oh, please, they did not have that fabric back then or anything like it, if you're going to *try* to make nobility garb would it KILL you to use fabrics that at least look right?" This is not to say that I didn't make quick sketches of a few clothing booth pieces that were almost pure fantasy, but by and large I didn't like what I saw people wearing. Now I know that 'Faire and historical accuracy are not the same thing. This is just me realizing what I've been shaping myself toward.

And that was our weekend. Thud now.
