Gasps in class
May. 22nd, 2003 02:42 pmIt's always fun to be able to tell who in your class is an otaku by one single remark the teacher drops.
Our subject this week (the class is on Japanese Theater) has been Takarazuka. Which is an all-female drama school accepting only 20 applicants per year. The graduates become part of Takarazuka Review. A very large part of the attraction of Takarazuka are the otokoyaku, women who play idealized men. This stands as kind of a corollary to the onnagata in kabuki, who are men playing idealized women. In any case, Professor Klein followed the career of one of the otokoyaku after her retirement from Takarazuka. This performer's name is Suzukaze Mayo. Aka the seiyuu of Himura Kenshin.
About a third of the class woke up at that point.
