When it's slow enough at work that I'm going to be dead bored otherwise, I do crafts. Crochet, sewing, or most recently, embroidery. This naturally attracts the interest of the customers as they wander past me to go to the restrooms, to the parking lot, to the patio. I get comments. In all the time I've been doing this, I have only ever gotten one negative comment, from a customer who seemed to think it would be better for hosts to stand around doing nothing rather than keeping their idle hands busy. Other reactions have ranged from "oh, you should pick up tatting!" (which made me think of [livejournal.com profile] ghilledhu) to "that's beautiful; it's a dying art" to "do they make you do that?" Given that the restaurant I work at is mining-themed, handwork is actually fairly in keeping with the theme, which is why I can get away with it.

So tonight I embroidered chickens. ^^

Isn't that really unhygenic? And Sandy want's to know how you got them to hold still. Curious minds and all that.

Well, you see, I just dip 'em in a vat of boiling water first. Takes care of both the germs and the moving around, really. Makes making 'em into dinner much easier, too. :)

About the one customer who got into a snit, there are people out there who get pissed off if you are not standing at the ready to hear their every whim. Sure, they're just walking past you to go to the bathroom, but what if they needed you right that very second! Oh, the horror!
I can't stand people who expect waitstaff to be servants.
