I am a packrat. I have long known this. There's something in me that says "collect! keep! might need!" I generally blame this impulse on my grandparents, who were, after all, products of the depression. I've spent the past couple days unpacking books for the new bookcase and I'm quite proud of myself in that I've refilled two boxes with books to be sold to the used bookstore, or failing that, given to the Goodwill. But then I look at what's still on the bookshelf and ask myself "why am I keeping two copies of the Harry Potter books?" (one American, one British). I suppose this is a dilemma for another time and I should feel proud of what I have accomplished. Still need a third bookcase, though, for reference books. And I haven't even gotten to the manga yet....

It also comes down to packratism when I consider my fabric collection. I have way more fabric than I need. I have way more fabric than a couple of people could need. The problem is that there's a speed limit at which one can sew.

I want to be rid of some of my stuff so that I can have room again, the luxury of space, but I'm just too attached to things. I'm getting better--the recent cleaning spree saw two rather good-sized donations to the Goodwill. But like with body fat, one can't just strip away everything in a day. It's not healthy. So I'm walking the way to "less stuff" with baby steps. But at least I'm walking.

Heh. I always find that the minute I get rid of something is exactly when I'll discover I need it.

But I'm having to get rid of stuff just because I have so little space. Ah, the wonders of a tiny apartment...
