A bad night

Wonderful Husband and I have just spent the last four hours in the emergency veterinarian's office. Ash pretty much collapsed into his food dish and was comatose for an hour while we waited. The vet's determination is that he's cold, undernourished, and his blood sugar is in the basement. They were going to chrge us somewhere between $400-600 to keep him overnight, so rather than pay money we can't afford or just let him die, I opted to take him home and try to save him myself. They gave him a subcutaneous shot of fluids, us a couple of hot water bottle packs, and a small bottle of Karo syrup with an eyedropper. I'm to keep him warm and give him a few drops every hour. He woke briefly on the five-minute car ride back home but is currently sleeping again. I've only had him a few days and he's going to be given up for adoption, but I've spent my evening crying and I'm pulling an all-nighter hoping that the little baby in my lap will just keep breathing and get better.

My sister will be getting home to relieve me around 8:30, and then I have to be up at PMX by 11:00 to judge for the Masquerade....

Survival report.

Ash has survived the night's hypoglycemic episode with judicious use of cuddling, hot water bottles, and Karo syrup. He ate a little bit and drank a little bit but he's not in the clear yet, and I should take him to a vet today. So of course the only local vet I know about is booked up until Tuesday....
