Jack, the orange fluffy cat, seems to have decided that "You humans are supposed to be up at seven, right?" I say this because yesterday and today, when we were trying to sleep in, he has started meowing outside the bedroom door around 7:20. It's not because he wants outside (too wet for his fastidious little paws) and not because he needs food or drink. No, it's simply to get us up. *sigh* Well, I got up for him this morning, leaving Wonderful Husband still asleep, which is good as he needs more sleep than I do anyway. Still, more sleep for myself would've been nice too....

It's cold and it's raining and I'm spending my time with beads, making something beautiful.

I went through my button collection this morning, looking for a good shank button to use for the clasp of the necklace. It was like rereading a good book, or visiting an old friend. I currently have four button boxes. One was my mother's. These are the buttons I played with in my childhood, sorting them, spinning them on strings, making necklaces out of them to play dress-up. The other three were my grandmothers'. They're fun to go through because I don't know them as well. I wonder what this strip of leather once was, that has four buttons on it--a glove, maybe?. That really fancy one, was it saved off of an old dress from the '40s? Were these utilitarian ones part of an old workshirt one of my grandfathers wore out? It's a weird type of family continuity, but it makes me feel closer to those who came before me....

I watched episode eight of HaruToki today and didn't manage to snark it *too* badly... though the point about the Hachiyou being yin and yang aspects for each of the four gods does make me want to work out which is supposed to be the seme and which the uke....

Also sat down and watched The Return of the King:EE, which was fun. Long, but fun. I like the added bits. They make things flow much more smoothly.

And I'm about half done with the beading project I've been working on. I'll probably just hit halfway with the thread I have, and then I need to rummage around for the other spool of white beading thread I know I have somewhere.

I should probably go sit down and finish the fringe on the stole, or at least make a valiant attempt, because starting tomorrow I need to be working on my dress for [livejournal.com profile] hoshikage's wedding.

Last night I rewatched Fantasia. (The original. Though I did pop in Fantasia 2000 to show Wonderful Husband, who's never seen F2K, the Carnival of the Animals segment. There's just something about the concept of flamingos with yoyos....) It's a film that is holding up EXTREMELY well for being sixty-five years old. In fact, given that it bombed when it came out, it's a movie that has only improved with age. It is also a film that makes me want to take execs at Disney and slap them. I just don't understand why they ever got rid of the traditional animation. I watch Fantasia and I goggle. There's just so much stuff in there that is drop dead gorgeous that computer animation just can't nail yet.

I love so many things about the film. There's the 1940 attempts at PC-ness - "the centaurs and their girlfriends the centaurettes" (me: look, it's the frat boys coming to pick up the sorority girls"), the subtle sarcasm on the popularity of The Nutcracker, and, just sometimes the sheer joy of the music and the mind. This time my favorite piece ended up being Dance of the Hours because I let myself realize that this was probably the piece the creators had the most fun with. Do the traditional ballet, but replace all the graceful ballerinas with ostriches, hippos, elephants, and alligators. Take advantage of the inherent sight gags.

It doesn't hurt that I, like many others, hear Dance of the Hours and start singing "Hello, Muddah, Hello Faddah." :)

Ah, progress level: trim sewn on handbag for wedding, beading on stole finished, thread tails buried on one end. Only have the other end and then tightening the straps on my dress and I'll be done. ^^
