Title: Chaos Choreography
Author: Seanan McGuire
Length: 356 pages
Book five of the Incryptid series (arguably six, if you count Sparrow Hill Road) takes us back to Verity Price and reminds me that I still need to read at least one of the freebie stories Seanan posts on her website.
This story was very much predicated on Verity's history as a ballroom dancer who had appeared on a televised dance competition show. I have the feeling Seanan did a lot of research into how those are actually run and filmed. And then, of course, the body count started.
I loved how I couldn't tell until the end who the snake cultists were. And the ending itself... wow. Was not expecting that. Will be fascinated to see the ramifications in future books.
Verdict: Recommended.
Title: Dodger
Author: Terry Pratchett
Length: 357 pages
I pulled this one off my inlaws' shelf as something to read while waiting for the Squiddle to fall asleep. For the first couple of nights I actually read it aloud to him, but then he started indicating for me to be quiet, and then even more recently has started kicking me out of his room. :(
Initially I found this a bit hard to get into, as it's inspired by the works of Charles Dickens, and I've never been the greatest fan. That said, after a few chapters the language and sentence structure stopped bothering me, and I read the last third or so in a rush last night.
Verdict: Not the greatest of Pratchett's work, but fun enough. Recommended.
