50 in '15: #60 & Summary
Jan. 1st, 2016 08:31 amI decided to go for broke and power through my other library book last night, finishing it just before midnight.
Title: Libriomancer
Author: Jim C. Hines
Length: 305 pages
I've been reading Jim Hines' LJ for a while, as what he has to say is generally interesting, even when I have no idea what's going on (like the Sad Puppies/Rabid Puppies thing for the Hugo awards this year... bwuh???). But his original-fairy-tale-versions-of-Disney-princesses-teamup books... just couldn't keep my interest.
Libriomancer fared a little better in that respect. The premise is a secret order of magicians with the power to pull things out of books. Which sounds really cool! And Our Hero, who has been put on the magical back burner for a few years because of a mission gone bad, must save the day. And he's a lover of speculative fiction, so it becomes a case of gleefully-spot-the-reference!
There are also some more thoughtful aspects to this work as well, such as an oppositional force character with autism, the larger spectrum of sexuality not being erased, and the nature of control/consent. The last being a thorny issue with less clear-cut answers than might be expected.
In any case, this is the first of a series. I'll definitely be seeing if the library has the others.
Verdict: Recommended.
And now, for my 2015 reading summary. 60 books, totalling 14,573 pages. The first year since I've started doing this that I've not only met but exceeded my goal of 50 books. Not bad. On to 2016!
