Author: Ruth Chew
Length: 96 pages
I always love finding new Ruth Chew books. And this one is not just new to my collection, it's new to me!
Written in 1974, this gives a glimpse into Brooklyn as it was then... I suspect it's different now. This book is slightly different from Chew's usual in that there is no adult to explain the magic situation the children get into, and while the happenings are benign, it's strongly hinted that they could easily be otherwise.
Verdict: Happy me. Recommended for lovers of juvenile low fantasy.
Title: Jane on Her Own
Author: Ursula K. LeGuin
Length: 42 pages
The final book of the Catwings quartet. I found a boxed set of all four today at the library's bookshop for a dollar. Win!
Jane, the youngest of the five Catwing siblings, is bored with life on the farm, and decides to go adventuring. But what her siblings warned her might happen, does. She's caught and exhibited. She learns, and grows, and escapes, and finds her own place to be. A fitting conclusion to the series.
Verdict: I love the whole Catwings series. Recommended.
