Feeling like a bad parent

I suppose getting your finger caught in a door hinge is an inevitable part of childhood. I still vividly remember when I found out that no, the door will always win.

But I was not ready for Squiddle to experience this at seventeen months of age. Last week he caught the tip of his right ring finger in a closing door. We checked and the bone didn't seem to be crushed or anything, and his range of motion was fine. The finger was bright red for a day or so, and then went back to normal.

Except yesterday it looked like blood bruising under the nail.

And today the entire nail has gone black and started falling off.

I've googled the phenomenon, and apparently this is not uncommon and the nail should grow back fine over the next couple months.

But, god, that does not stop me from steeping myself in the I'm a bad parent guilt....

*HUGS* You're an AMAZING parent, things happen, he's not lastingly injured and will probably not even remember the experience.

Babies heal fast. ::hugs!::

Ouch! Yeah, the parental guilt is hard to dodge, but finger squashings are inevitable, and likely even necessary, in small doses, if young humans are eventually to learn to be careful of their digits.

It's a rite of passage. I didn't get my fingers caught in a door hinge until I was 17, and to this day the skin grows funny there. (Of course, it makes my nail grow longer with less strain on the nail, so it wasn't all bad! ^_~)
